quarter to pull away from a determined Holy Cross squad en route to an 11-7
victory at Shea Stadium Tuesday night. The Black Knights presented junior
goalie Scott Alpaugh with a win in his first collegiate start, while
improving to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League.
Freshman long-stick E.J. Behrendt picked up a ground ball at midfield late
in the second quarter and darted for the cage, beating Holy Cross goalie
Brian Hodgdon to tie the game at 4-4. When freshman face-off specialist Erik
Mineo won the ensuing draw, scooped up the loose ball and threw one by
Hodgdon just six seconds later, Army took the lead for good, 5-4. Goals by
Chris Woods and Andy Mounce capped the four-goal string and increased the
hosts' lead to three at the break. The markers by Behrendt and Mineo were
the first collegiate points for both in their young careers.
Holy Cross (0-4/0-1) opened the second half with two straight goals of its
own to pull within one, but that would be as close as the visitors would
get. Army scored four of the last five goals of the game, including the last
three straight to salt the game away. The Black Knights' defense did not
allow a goal in the fourth quarter.
Army senior All-American Tim Pearson led the Black Knights in scoring with
four points (1G, 3A). Sophomore attackman Jeff Bryan had two goals and an
assist, and junior midfielder Andy Mounce had two goals, including the
eventual game-winner at 8:13 of the third quarter.
Alpaugh made 10 saves on 17 shots to record his first college win in the
cage. Hodgdon made 15 saves. Mineo won 17 of 22 faceoffs in addition to his
first college goal.
The Black Knights will return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel
to Bucknell for a Patriot League match with the Bison. Face-off is scheduled
for 1 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Stadium. An Army win at Bucknell would give
the Black Knights a seemingly insurmountable two-game advantage in the
standings and put them in the driver's seat for the league's automatic bid
to the NCAA Tournament.
