a one-point halftime cushion into a four-point advantage and the Midshipmen
went on to a 9-6 victory over Army in front of a record crowd at
sun-splashed Michie Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Mids (8-5) held a slim 4-3 lead heading into the locker room, but goals
by Dan Kretz, David Pittard and Ben Bailey in the first six minutes of the
third quarter opened up a very hard-hitting and tight ballgame.
Army's Mike Kamon pulled the Black Knights back to within two with
consecutive markers almost one minute apart. But Navy's Eddie McKinnon
slammed the door on any possible comeback with a nifty behind-the-head shot
that beat Army goalie Dominik Nogic with just one second remaining in the
third. Both McKinnon and Bailey finished with hat tricks to pace the Mids
scoring attack.
Army (6-6) was unable to muster much of a counter offensive in the final 15
minutes. Needing three goals to tie, the hosts finally broke through when
Kamon scored his third of the day with 3:18 left. Still trailing by two,
Army needed to make something happen.
In an attempt to create a turnover, Nogic was forced to vacate his net and
mark a Navy attackman. Kretz was the beneficiary, putting the final point of
the day up on the board when he scored into an open cage with 1:10 left.
Navy took the early one-goal lead when Bailey knotched his first of the day
at the 13:40 mark of the opening quarter. However, Army would answer 13
seconds later when Jeff Bryan finished off a nice feed from Tim Pearson to
give the Black Knights its only tie of the game, 1-1.
The Mids exploded for three unanswered goals to pull in front, 4-1. Bailey
got his second of the game and McKinnon penciled his name into the scorebook
for the first time on an extra-man advantage to close out the first quarter.
McKinnon would quickly strike again off a feed from Pittard just over two
minutes into the second period to stake Navy to its 4-1 lead.
Army's Brian Green scored his second goal in as many games at 6:35 of the
second and Chris Woods beat Navy goalie Jon Higdon with 1:12 left to send
the Black Knights into the break trailing by one.
Higdon made nine saves in Navy's cage, despite not recording a stop after
halftime. He made seven saves in the second quarter as Army fired off 14
shots on the preseason All-American goalkeeper. Nogic turned aside eight
shots for the Black Knights.
The 77th meeting between Army and Navy drew an Army lacrosse record of 4,437
spectators to Michie Stadium, breaking the old mark of 3,203 set in 1998
against the Midshipmen. Navy has won the last five straight in the storied
rivalry and now leads the overall series, 48-26-3.
