possession of the ball, while a man up, with 50 seconds left in the game,
but could not get a shot off as No. 16 Ohio State held on for a 14-13
victory at Shea Stadium at West Point Saturday afternoon. The loss dropped
the Black Knights to 3-3 on the season, while the Buckeyes improved to 4-2.
Army's frenzied comeback from a seven-goal deficit began midway through the
third quarter, but the Black Knights never could get the equalizer they were
looking for. Junior midfielder Chris Woods beat Ohio State goalie Tony Russo
with 1:58 to play in the game, pulling the Black Knights within a goal at
14-13. The Buckeyes then gave Army the break it needed when they were
whistled for a holding penalty with 1:06 left.
However, the Black Knights misfired on a pass while setting up their attack
and the ball bounced out of bounds at midfield, giving possession of the
ball back to the Buckeyes. Ohio State took advantage of the turnover,
holding onto possession the rest of the way and icing the win.
The Black Knights trailed 13-6 with 4:27 left in the third quarter when
junior midfielder John Ryan began a five-goal spurt with two unassisted
goals that got Army back in the game, entering the final 15 minutes.
Sophomore Marko Kostovic added to the rally with an extra-man tally at 11:39
of the fourth, and classmate Jeff Bryan scored 10 seconds apart off assists
from senior Tim Pearson to pull the Black Knights to within two at 13-11.
Ohio State cooled the rally, briefly, on a marker by Curtis Smith, his
second of the game, that gave the visitors a crucial three-goal lead. Army
put together one more comeback attempt as junior Andy Mounce dented the
twine with 2:35 to go and Woods followed, beating Russo at 1:58. However,
that was as how the game would end.
Russo was the story of the game for the Buckeyes. The sophomore goalie made
17 saves in net, several from point-blank range, to help stake Ohio State to
a 10-5 lead at the half. Army's Dominik Nogic stopped 11 shots for the Black
Knights.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two goals in the first 2:44 of the
game and two more 26 seconds apart with five minutes remaining in the
opening frame. OSU defenseman John DiCamillo scooped up a ground ball off
the opening faceoff of the game and raced down field, putting the Buckeyes
up 1-0 just 17 seconds into the contest. Pat Myers made it 2-0 shortly
thereafter and then Smith and Anthony Gilardi doubled the lead before Army
broke into the scoring column.
Senior midfielder Colin Burke got Army on the scoreboard with 2:46 to play
in the first. Gilardi notched his second of the quarter with 1:20 left, and
Black Knights' senior co-captain Tim Pearson made it 5-2 on an extra-man
advantage with 23 ticks remaining.
The goal was the 200th career point for Pearson as he becomes just the
second player in Army lacrosse history to reach that lofty plateau. He
finished with a goal and two assists to move within two points of Army's
all-time scoring record of 204.
Goals by Jimmy Vlahakis, 10 seconds into the second, and Woods brought Army
as close as they would get at 5-4. Ohio State answered the Black Knights'
three-goal run with a four-goal string of its own. Vlahakis ended that
streak with an EMO goal in the final seconds of the half. But the Buckeyes
received a boost going into the locker room on a man-down goal by Mike
Norton with 14 seconds left.
The Black Knights will travel to No. 12 Hofstra next Saturday for a 2:30
p.m. faceoff as Army looks to halt its current two-game losing streak.
