the final five minutes of the game to defeat visiting Rutgers, 13-12,
Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The win evened the Black Knights record
at 4-4, while the Scarlet Knights dropped to 2-8.
Midfielder John Ryan put the finishing touches on the rally, completing a
hat trick for himself with 2:50 left in the fourth quarter and giving the
Black Knights their only lead. Marko Kostovic had tied the contest 28
seconds earlier with his second marker of the game.
"We are a team with a lot of confidence in the fourth quarter," head coach
Jack Emmer said. "Regardless of the situation, this team understands what it
takes to win."
Junior Chris Woods started the ball rolling with 4:53 left on a blast from
out in front of the cage. Andy Mounce then added his second goal of the day
44 seconds later, cutting a 12-9 deficit to one and setting the stage for
Kostovic's and Ryan's heroics.
Army benefited from four straight wins on the faceoff by Mike Kamon that
enabled the hosts to hold possession of the ball for most of the final five
minutes. Kamon relieved Adam Hurley who had handled the majority of the
draws all afternoon.
"Mike takes regular midfield shifts, whereas Adam is a faceoff specialist,"
Emmer said of his decision to switch face-off men. "We saved Mike until we
needed him, and he certainly came up with some big wins."
Senior attackman Tim Pearson led the Black Knights with two goals and four
assists. Ryan had a hat trick and Mounce and Kostovic each had two goals
apiece. Senior goalie Dominik Nogic made seven saves to move into seventh
place on Army's all-time saves list with 442 career stops.
Pearson scored his 91st career tally one minute into the second half to tie
the game, 7-7. With the goal, Pearson moved into ninth place on the all-time
goals scored charts at Army. He is already the school's all-time leading
scorer as well as its assist king.
Army returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Patriot League rival Colgate at
7 p.m. at Shea Stadium. Both the Black Knights and Raiders are 2-1 entering
the showdown at West Point.
