Army (1-2) held off a determined Seawolves squad in the fourth quarter after Stony Brook (0-3) had cut a six-goal lead in half entering the final 15 minutes of play.
Sean Chamberlain, Ryan Hughes and Rhys Duch tallied consecutively in the last 3:28 of the third stanza to pull Stony Brook within striking distance at 9-6 heading into the fourth quarter. However, Kevin LoRusso found the back of the Seawolves' net one minute into the final frame to push the lead back to four and keep the visitors at bay.
Stony Brook's Bo Tripodi cut the deficit to three once again, but this time Matt Scheel finished off his trifecta with a marker in transition to re-establish Army's four-goal advantage with a little over six minutes left in the contest.
Tripodi capped a hat trick of his own and Jason Cappadoro potted his second of the night with 1:13 remaining, but it was as close as Stony Brook would get.
Army sophomore Adam Fullerton made a career-high 15 saves, including six in the fourth quarter to stave off the Seawolves comeback bid. His counterpart, Brendan Callahan stopped nine shots for the visitors.
The Black Knights jumped on Stony Brook early, running out to a 5-1 lead after Paul Wigdzinski buried his first career goal off a feed from Walker at 13:24 of the second quarter.
Stony Brook answered with two tallies of its own before the half ended to trail by two going into the locker room.
However, Army came out blazing by going on a four-goal run to open up a 9-3 lead. Mike Obringer started the decisive outburst with a man-down goal. Ryan Chase dented the twine twice in a four-minute span, with one of those coming on an extra-man opportunity, around a goal by Scheel.
Jason Cappadoro finished with five points (2G, 3A) to support Tripodi's hat trick, and Chamberlain scored twice for Stony Brook.
Army hits the road this weekend with a trip to No. 7 Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field. |
