| The Game Story: | Providence, RI -- Senior midfielder Jimmy Mormile (Oceanside, NY)
exploded for four goals to lead Brown to an 11-8 men's lacrosse win
over Dartmouth and lift the Bears to a second place tie in the Ivy
standings with Princeton, a half game back of first place Cornell.
The win extends Brown's record to 5-6 overall, 3-1 in the Ivy League,
while Dartmouth dropped its fourth straight game, falling to 5-5
overall, 0-4 in Ivy play.
"Today's game was a must-win for us to keep pace in the Ivy League,"
said Brown coach Scott Nelson. "With Ivy games against Cornell and
Princeton remaining, we control our own destiny as we battle for the
Ivy League title."
Mormile's goal with 44 seconds remaining in the second quarter game
Brown the lead for good, and gave the Bears a 4-3 lead at halftime.
The Bears broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the
Gig Green 5-0, to grab a 9-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Five different Brown players scored goals in the quarter - junior
Michael Hughes (Rockville Centre, NY), junior Jon Thompson (Freeport,
ME), freshman Britton Derkac (Virginia Beach, VA), freshman Chazz
Woodson (St. George, VA), and Mormile.
Dartmouth rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring the first four goals
of the quarter to pull to within two goals, 9-7, on sophomore Tom
Daniels' second goal of the game at the 6:33 mark of the final
quarter. The Bears answered with goals by Hughes at the 7:46
mark, and Mormile at 10:19, to put the game out of reach.
Brown won the game in the trenches, picking up 45 ground balls to
Dartmouth's 26 ground balls. Sophomore goalie Mike Levin (Pittsford,
NY) made 9 saves for the Bears, while junior goalie Mike Gault
registered 9 saves for the Big Green.
Hughes finished the day with two goals and two assists, while
Thompson added two goals for the Bears.
After a mid-week game against Providence College on Wednesday at 4:00
p.m., Brown will travel to Cornell for an Ivy League showdown against
the Big Red in Ithaca, New York.
