winning goal on an end-to-end run early in the fourth quarter to lift
third-ranked Loyola to an 8-6 men's lacrosse victory over Brown at
Stevenson Field. The win keeps the Greyhounds unbeaten with a 6-0
record, while Brown falls to 2-3, losing its three games by a total
of four goals.
Loyola jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when freshman Grant
Halford scored 1:39 into the game. Brown answered decisively with
three unanswered goals by senior Jim Mormile (Oceanside, NY), junior
Chas Gessner (Hyattsville, MD) and junior Michael Hughes (Rockville
Centre, NY) to take a 3-1 lead after one quarter.
The Greyhounds tied the game at the half on goals by
sophomore Stephen Brundage and senior Michael Sullivan.
Brown jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the third quarter when
Mormile scored at 39 seconds and Gessner scored at 1:41. Loyola
freshman Parker Adams closed the gap to 5-4 with a goal at 2:38.
Gessner scored what proved to be Brown's last goal of the game,
netting his third goal of the game at 10:47 to give the Bears a 6-4
advantage.
Brundage and Sullivan ewach scored their second goals of the
game to tie the game, 6-6, after three quarters. Brasko raced the
length of the field, scoring with 11:45 remaining in the fourth
quarter, to give the Greyhounds a 7-6 advantage. Senior Kevin Roy
added an insurance goal for Loyola at 5:19, as the Greyhounds held
Brown scoreless for the game's last 28 minutes.
The goalie play for both teams was outstanding with Bears'
goalkeeper Mike Levin (Pittsford, NY) making 14 saves, while Loyola
goalie mark Bloomquist registered 10 saves.
It doesn't get any easier Brown with number one ranked
Syracuse coming to Providence next Saturday, March 30, to battle the
Bears. Game time is 12:00 noon at Stevenson Field.
