| The Game Story: | Providence, Rhode Island - The Brown men's lacrosse team scored seven
unanswered goals in the third quarter to rally from a 3-2 halftime
deficit to defeat Sacred Heart, 14-5, in its 2002 season opener.
Junior Jon Thompson (Freeport, ME) scored two of his game
high three goals in the 7-0 third-quarter run, while sophomore Brian
Miller (Monkton, MD) added 2 goals in the spurt. Thompson's first
goal of the game tied the score 3-3 at the 3:53 mark of the third
quarter, and freshman Ryan Culligan's (Cortlandt Manor, NY) first
career goal gave Brown the lead for good, 4-3 just 48 seconds later.
Senior Mike Albarelli (Setauket, NY) scored with four seconds left in
the quarter to give Brown a 9-3 lead.
Junior All-American Chas Gessner (Hyattsville, MD), senior Matt
Kelley (Haverford, PA) and Culligan each scored two goals for the
Bears. Junior Michael Hughes (Rockville Centre, NY) scored a goal
and handed out two assists. Brown senior Jimmy Mormile (Oceanside,
NY) returned to action after missing all of last season due to injury
and scored a goal and an assist.
Sophomore goalie Mike Levin (Pittsford, NY) was spectacular in goal
for the Bears, making 17 saves.
Five different Pioneers' players scored goals, Stephen Grabow, Ben
Giamichael, Ryan Petit, Jorge Bravo and Mike Robel.
