| The Game Story: | Providence, Rhode Island - Junior attackman Michael Springer scored
an unassisted goal with 1:19 remaining in the first overtime period
to rally number one ranked Syracuse to a 14-13 win over Brown at
Stevenson Field. The win lifts Syracuse to 7-1 overall, while Brown
falls to 2-4 overall, losing its four games by a total of five goals.
Brown junior All-American Chas Gessner (Hyattsville, MD)
scored his third goal of the game with 5:46 remaining to tie the
score, 12-12. Senior attackman Mike Albarelli (Chester, NJ) gave
Brown a 13-12 lead with 4:24 remaining in the fourth quarter, scoring
on a pass from freshman Ryan Culligan (Cortlandt Manor, NY). The
Orangemen drew even when sophomore Sean Lindsay scored on a pass from
senior Brian Solliday with just 36 seconds remaining in the fourth
quarter, sending the game into overtime.
Both teams had a chance for victory in overtime. Syracuse's
Spencer Wright had two shots at Brown sophomore goalie Mike Levin
(Pittsford, NY), while Brown's Gessner was stopped at point blank
range by the Orangemen's goalie Jay Pfeifer.
The game was played at a frenetic pace with neither team
leading by more than two goals at any time. The game was tied eight
different times, and there were four lead changes.
Brown took a 7-6 lead at halftime when Gessner scored with 58
seconds left in the second quarter to give the Bears a 7-6 lead at
intermission. The Bears opened their biggest lead of the game, 8-6,
when senior Jimmy Mormile (Oceanside, NY) scored on a pass from
Culligan, early in the third quarter.
Syracuse answered with three unanswered goals by Jarrett
Park, Brian Nee and Michael Powell to grab a 9-8 advantage at the
6:01 mark of the third quarter.
Mormile scored his fourth goal of the game to knot the score
at 9-9, but Solliday put the Orangemen in the lead again, 10-9. A
Brown goal by junior Jon Thompson was answered by Solliday once again
to give the Orangemen an 11-10 advantage heading into the fourth
quarter.
The two teams exchanged goals once again with Brown scoring
on a goal by Culligan and Syracuse responding with a goal by Powell
to take a 12-11 lead.
Overall, the Bears were led by Mormile, who scored four goals
and added two assists. Gessner finished the day with three goals,
while Culligan, Jon Thompson (Freeport, ME) and Albarelli scored two
goals each.
Powell led the Orangemen with three goals and one assist,
while Springer, Park, and Solliday added two goals apiece.
Brown goalie Mike Levin was spectacular, making 18 saves as
the Orangemen fired 57 shots at the Brown goal. Jay Pfeifer
registered six saves for the Orangemen.
The Bears will open their Ivy League season on Wednesday,
traveling to New Haven to battle Yale in a 7:00 p.m. game.
