deciding goal that came with 6:50 remaining in the game, as the Crimson
defeated Bucknell 10-9 in non-league lacrosse action this afternoon in
Christy Mathewson Stadium.
The 25th -ranked Crimson outscored the Bison 5-1 in the third quarter,
making a fourth quarter comeback a difficult task. The Bison made a rally
in the final six minutes with three goals, two of which came in the final
90 seconds, but time ran out leaving the Bison at 0-2 on the season.
The Bison came out strong in the first half, with Rob Lane marking up the
first goal just 50 seconds into the game. Freshman Chris Cara acted
quickly as well earning two of his three goals and his lone assist as the
Bison went into the locker room at halftime up 4-3. Junior goalkeeper
Justin Sussman ended the first half with a strong defensive stand with
eight saves.
The third quarter started on a sour note as Harvard was quick to strike
scoring its first of five goals within the first minute of play. With
three man-down opportunities the Bison were able to cash in at 11:30 as Wes
Fetchet stormed the net and gave the Bison their final lead of the game at
5-4. The last nine minutes of action in the third quarter entailed the
turning point of the game as the Crimson scored four goals, including a
buzzer beater by freshman Mike McBride.
Trailing 8-5 going into the fourth quarter, the Bison needed a quick score
but did not get one until over five minutes had elapsed when John
Terraciano scored one of his two fourth quarter goals. Two late goals by
Harvard put a damper on the Bison spirits, but with one last wind Bucknell
rallied to score three goals within the last six minutes of action. The
final goal came with 50 seconds remaining and gave the Bison one last
chance to send the game into overtime. After a lengthy face-off the Bison
finally gained possession. But as the seconds ran down junior Andrew
Sanders lashed a final heave only to be deflected by Harvard goalie Jake
McKenna to bring the game to an end.
Bucknell's defense held strong with a minimal amount of penalties and a
strong performance by Sussman as he had 12 total saves.
Bucknell faces the University of Pennsylvania next Saturday at 1 P.M.,
while Harvard hosts Hartford at 2 P.M.
