Bucknell Men's Lacrosse Dominates Harvard

Cara Tallies Nine Points in 15-4 Victory

March 6, 2004

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's lacrosse team used six goals and three assists from junior Chris Cara to defeat Harvard 15-4 Saturday afternoon. The Bison built an 11-0 lead and did not allow Harvard to score until the third quarter. Sophomore goalie Matt Baran finished with 17 saves as the Bison improved to 2-0.

Baran was most impressive in the first quarter, stopping seven shots and allowing Bucknell to build a three-goal lead. John Salvesen put Bucknell on the board at 6:40 in the first off a feed from Cara. Freshman Brian Gargan's first career goal at 5:05 followed by an unassisted score from Cara put the Bison up 3-0 at the end of the first.

After two more scores for Cara in the second quarter, senior Wes Fetchet's second goal of the season put the Bison up 6-0. Bucknell took an eight-goal lead into halftime after a Ross Albers goal and Cara's fourth of the half with 1:45 remaining.

In the third, senior Craig Fleishman scored off a feed from Cara then assisted junior Pat Christensen for his seventh goal of the young season. Mike McBride tallied Harvard's first goal with 25 seconds left in the third quarter on the man-advantage.

A flurry of three Bison goals in 20 seconds was highlighted by freshman Greg Sowyrda's first career goal at 13:53 left in the fourth.

Baran, in just his second start, established a career-high with his 17 saves. Cara's nine points mark a career-high, and he sits tied with Christensen for the team lead in goals with nine after just two games for the Bison. Junior Ryan Goodman won 10 of 17 faceoffs for Bucknell.

Harvard's loss dropped them to 1-1 on the season. Bucknell will head to Villanova on Tuesday, March 9 to take on the Wildcats at 7:00 p.m.
