| The Game Story: | INDIANAPOLIS, IND.- Notre Dame outscored the Butler lacrosse team 5-1 in the
first period en route to capturing a 12-8 Great Western Lacrosse League
victory over the Bulldogs on Sunday (Apr. 7) at the Butler Bowl. The loss
drops Butler to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in GWLL action, while the nationally
ranked Fighting Irish tallied their third win in a row, improving to 4-5
overall and 2-0 in league play.
Butler would take an early lead, as senior Greg Ruccia (Nesconset, NY)
scored off of a Lawrence O'Toole (Hudson, Ohio) assist. Notre Dame, though,
recorded the final four goals of the first period to take a commanding 5-1
advantage. Sophomore Dan Berger tallied two of the Fighting Irish's five
goals in the initial stanza.
Butler scored again in the second quarter as Adam Cichostepski (Skaneateles,
NY) assisted Scott Walker (Upper Arlington, Ohio) on a goal at 10:45 to cut
the gap to 5-2. Devin Ryan answered quickly for Notre Dame on an unassisted
extra-man goal, and then A.J. Wright found the back of the net off of a
Brian Giordano assist to give the visitors a 7-2 lead.
Freshman Kyle Tietjen (Garden City, NY) gave the Bulldogs their third goal
of the day with 2:37 remaining in the second period and Matt Eizenberg's
(Hudson, Ohio) goal would pull Butler to within 7-4 entering into halftime.
The Bulldogs came out fighting in the second half, as Ryan Ward's (Victoria,
B.C.) back-to-back goals brought the Bulldogs back to within one (7-6). But,
Notre Dame answered again, scoring three goals of its own all within a
minute on the game clock to increase its lead to 10-6.
Cichostepski scored the final goal of the third period, off of an assist
from Tietjen and the Bulldogs would head into the final quarter down 10-7.
Ryan scored his second goal of the day at 13:37 in the fourth, off of a
Giordano assist. Butler got on the board one last time as O'Toole assisted
Tietjen on a goal at 10:11, but Notre Dame would close out the game with a
goal from Travis Wells, to give the Irish a 12-8 league triumph.
Berger was the most dangerous player for the Fighting Irish, offensively, as
the attackman recorded three goals on the afternoon. Teammate Kyle Frigon
posted two goals and two assists and Wells added a pair of goals and an
assist to his totals.
Tietjen and Ward each tallied two goals and an assist on the day for Butler.
Nick Antol played all 60 minutes for Notre Dame recording 13 saves in the
cage. His counterpart, Butler goalie Brendan Winkler (Miami, Fla.) also went
the distance, tallying 16 saves for the Bulldogs.
