of play, to lead the Cornell men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over Colgate in the Raiders home opener
of 2002 at Tyler's Field Tuesday.
Greenhalgh led the Big Red with his five goals while senior lacrosse newcomer Joe Parker (Crofton,
Md.) led Colgate with four goals and an assist. Senior Raider keeper Chris Hettler (Livrpool, N.Y.)
commanded the Colgate defense with his 18 saves.
Greenhalgh opened scoring at 2:01 in the first period with the assist from JP Schalk and again at
4:39, unassisted, to give Cornell a 2-0 lead.
Parker answered back for Colgate with his unassisted goal at 8:31, followed by freshman Matt Saxon's
(Bethesda, Md.) first collegiate goal at 9:34 to tie the game at 2-2. Saxon's goal was unassisted.
Schalk started out the second period for the Big Red with a man-advantage goal to put Cornell up 3-2
after Raider Scott Herbst (Short Hills, N.J.) was penalized for slashing. The Big Red continued to go
on a run with goals by sophomore Ian Rosenberger at 3:24 and Greenhalgh's third goal on the day at
12:08, assisted by senior Billy Fort to settle at a 5-2 score.
Parker contributed Colgate's lone goal before a halftime break at 13:27 in the second to set the score
at 5-3.
Senior Josh Heller put Cornell on the board to start the third period with his unassisted goal at 3:48
to put the Big Red up 6-3.
The Raiders then scored the final two goals of the third period with senior Ian Franke's (Duxbury,
Mass.) goal at 12:27, assisted by Parker. Parker would later score his third goal at 14:28 with
Colgate down one man after Greg Beurbe (Plainstow, N.H.) was penalized for slashing.
Cornell started out strong in the final stanza scoring three goals to take a four-point lead.
Freshman Justin Reed tallied a goal at 3:29 while Greenhalgh would scoreh is final two goals of the
game at 5:01 and 5:22, assisted by Andrew Collins and Frank Sands, respectively.
With the score set at 9-5, the Raiders would answer back with three goals of their own. Franke scored
at 6:32, assisted by Herbst. Nick Gerken (Wilton, Conn.) tallied his goal at 8:21, again assisted by
Herbst. Parker would score his fourth goal of the day, unassisted at 8:47, to bring Colgate back
within one at 9-8.
Sands finished Cornell's scoring on the day with his unassisted goal at 9:07 before Colgate's Jeff
Vander Meulen (Liverpool, N.Y.) finished all Colgate scoring at 11:22 to settle the final score at
10-9. |
