(2/28/08)—Colgate University junior Kevin Colleluori (Bethpage, N.Y.) registered a career-high six points to lead the Raiders to a 10-4 win over Saint Joseph’s in Colgate's men’s lacrosse home opener. Colleluori finished the game with four goals and two assists to lead all scorers in the win.
Junior Brandon Corp (Chittenango, N.Y.) added three goals, while senior Matt Lalli (Princeton Junction, N.J.) had a goal and an assist. Colgate outscored the Hawks 7-2 in the first half to secure the six-goal victory.
The Raiders jumped all over the Hawks, scoring the game’s first four goals in the opening 10 minutes. Colleluori got things started 1:51 into the first quarter as he fired a Lalli pass past Saint Joseph goalie Eric Hotaling.
Corp added an unassisted tally of his own with12:03 on the clock and Colleluori collected a rebound from a Lalli shot and put it into the back of the cage. The Raiders pushed the lead to 4-0 when sophomore Ian Murphy (Constantia, N.Y.) took a Colleluori feed from behind the cage, faked a shot to beat the defender and beat Hotaling for his second goal of the season.
Saint Joseph’s Steve Varga stopped the run 36 seconds later, beating sophomore goalie Tim Harrington (Lutherville, Md.) with a shot to the low right corner. Neither team could get on the board again in the final four minutes as Colgate led 4-1 after the first.
The second quarter proved to be much of the same for the Raiders. Saint Joseph’s kept Colgate off the board in the early going before Corp scored his second goal at the 8:26 mark for an 8-2 Raider lead.
Responding just over a minute later with a tally to make it 8-3 was Joe D’Avanzo, but Colgate scored two goals in the eight seconds to lead 7-2 at the break. Senior Chris Eck (Fairfield, Conn.) sent the Raiders into halftime in fashion with a great goal off the faceoff. Eck won the restart and raced down the right side of the field and rifled a shot high into the right corner for his first goal of the season.
The defenses tightened up in the second half with Colgate winning 3-2. Colleluori and Lalli were the goal scorers in the third and fourth quarters, while Andrew Mandela and Scott Cullinan posted goals for the Hawks.
Cullinan led Saint Joseph’s in scoring with a goal and an assist, while three other players had goals.
Harrington finished with 12 saves, including four in the fourth quarter. Hotaling made 13 stops for the game. Shots were tied 37-37, while Colgate won the groundball battle 35-32.
Eck went 10-of-14 at the faceoff X and Colgate was 12-of-18 for the game. The Raiders held Saint Joseph’s to just 13 clears on 21 opportunities and were 1-of-2 on man-up opportunities.
Colgate returns to action on March 2 at Canisius. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m. |
