The Game Story:
ITHACA, N.Y. Sophomore Andrew Collins (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) recorded his second consecutive seven-point game while junior co-captain Ryan McClay (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the defensive charge and scored his first goal of the season to lead the No. 13 Cornell men^Òs lacrosse team to a 16-5 victory over Canisius. Ahead 5-4 after the first half, the Big Red scored nine times in the third quarter to put the game away.

Collins got the ball rolling in the third quarter by taking a pass from junior J.P. Schalk (Jamesville, N.Y.) and beating Canisius goaltender Seth Vath for an extra-man goal. A faceoff win by senior Addison Sollog (Lynbrook, N.Y.) got the play started, and the goal came 18 seconds into the third quarter. The Big Red wouldn^Òt wait long for its next goal, as McClay scooped up a ground ball and went straight down the field to score his second career goal. The preseason first-team All-America defenseman also had an assist for his first career multiple-point game.

After an extra-man goal by sophomore Ian Rosenberger (Concord, N.H.) gave Cornell an 8-4 lead, Collins scored back-to-back goals to earn a six-goal lead. The Big Red would add four more goals in the half to end the upset bid of the Golden Griffins.

Canisius took the fight to Cornell, which owned a 2-0 series advantage coming into the game and averaged 23.5 goals per game against the Buffalo college. Jason Levesque scored the game^Òs opening goal at 1:45, but a penalty by Rick Neward allowed Cornell freshman Justin Redd (Towson, Md.) to even the score at 1-1. Cornell went 5-for-9 with the man-up advantage, and it has been 8-for-13 over the last two games. With freshman Sean Greenhalgh (St. Catherines, Ont,) missing the game with an injury, Redd is now the only player to score a goal in each game.

The game would be tied three more times in the first half, as neither team could establish more than a one-goal advantage. Schalk, Collins, Galen Beers (Darlington, Md.), and Billy Fort (Bethesda, Md.) each scored once for Cornell, but the strong play of Mark Miyashita kept the Canisius offense close. Miyashita assisted on four of Canisius^Ò five goals and scored the other one. Vath also kept the Golden Griffins close the junior goaltender made numerous point-blank saves over the first 30 minutes and ended the game with 15 saves over three quarters.

Cornell outshot Canisius 57-17 and earned a 45-36 advantage in ground balls. Junior Frank Sands (West Babylon, N.Y.) led the team with six ground balls. Cornell won 16 of 22 faceoffs, with Sollog winning 12 of 16. The game got chippy in the final quarter, as the two teams combined for eight penalties for 6:30 over the last 15 minutes.

Cornell will travel to State College, Pa., to battle Penn State. Last season, the Nittany Lions held Cornell scoreless in the final quarter to rally for an 8-7 victory over the Big Red on a snow-covered Schoellkopf Field. Penn State is ranked just below Cornell in the media poll (14/13), while it is ahead of Cornell in the coaches^Ò poll (13/16). The game can be heard locally on WTKO, or on the internet at www.cornellbigred.com.
