In all, 12 different Big Red players reached the scoring column as Cornell improved to 5-2 (3-0 Ivy), while harvard slipped to 4-3 (1-1 Ivy) with the defeat.
The senior tandem of Sean Greenhalgh (5g, 2a) and Kevin Nee (4g, 2a) combined for 13 points in the win, while Derek Haswell added two goals and an assist and Justin Redd assisted on three goals. In all, Ian Rosenberger (2 goals) and and John Glynn (2 assists) also had multiple-point games in the victory.
Cornell's dominance in the midfield broke open the game early as Cornell jumped out to a 3-0 lead and increased the advantage to 8-1 by halftime. Matt McMonagle made five first half saves and the only goal he allowed i nthe first 30 minutes was a rebound shot and score by Mike McBride with 3:02 remaining in the second period after a McMonagle save.
The Big Red answered Harvard's lone first half score with five straight goals in the second period, including two each by Haswell and Nee, that seemed to blow open the game.
The Crimson made a quick run early in the third period, scoring the first two goals to make it 8-3, the second on a score by Brian Mahler at the 8:04 mark. Just 13 seconds later, J.D. Nelson won the face-off and tallied his first goal of the year when Pisco found him quickly cutting from the center edge to make it 9-3. That began a 3-0 run that effectively sealed the game for the Big Red.
Cornell took advantage of the man advantage opportunities in the second half, getting six opportunities and cashing in on three of them, including twice in the fourth quarter. After Harvard opened the final 15 minutes of play with a score 2:18 in, the Big Red went on its second 5-0 run of the day with Greenhalgh scoring twice and assisting on a third goal. Harvard's Tom Boylan scored his second goal of the season with 2:53 remaining to close out the scoring.
Harvard struggled clearing the ball out of its offensive zone in the second half due to heavy Cornell pressure, completing just 5-of-12 clear attempts after halftime, including three failed clears that led directly to Big Red scores. On one, Crimson goalkeeper Evan O'Donnell's errant pass whent straight to Greenhalgh at midfield, who fired over the head of the out-of-position keeper for a score from midfield.
The Big Red will return to action on Tuesday, April 12 when it visits Syracuse for a 7 p.m. game in the Carrier Dome. |
