career-high seven times and junior Ryan Boyle tied her career-best with
nine points as the No. 2 Princeton men's lacrosse team handed Cornell a
17-9 loss today at Schoellkopf Field. Junior Andrew Collins led the Big Red
effort with two goals and three assists. Cornell suffered its first home
loss and first Ivy loss of 2003 and is now 7-4 overall with a 4-1 Ivy mark.
Princeton improved to 8-2 and now sits atop the conference standings with a
4-0 record.
Princeton goaltender Julian Gould made 11 saves in his 53:37 of action
before Matt Larkin and Dave Law combined to stop three more Cornell shots.
Big Red netminder Brandon Ross had a rough start, allowing goals on the
Tigers' first six shots on goal, and made nine saves on the afternoon.
Cornell outshot the Tigers by a 38-35 margin and held a 32-29 advantage in
ground balls. The Big Red also won the faceoff battle, earning 16 to
Princeton's 13, but the Tigers' efficient offense and strong defense came
through to earn the win.
Princeton got on the board first, 56 seconds into the game, as Matt
Trevenen found Brad Dumont for his 15th goal of the year. The visiting
Tigers got a goal from Will MacColl to make it a 2-0 game before Cornell's
Justin Redd found the back of the net on Collins' first assist of the day.
Trevenen and the Big Red's Dave Pittard traded goals before Josh White and
Owen Daly each had unassisted tallied to up the Tiger lead to 5-2.
Cornell's Sean Greenhalgh, who entered the game with a team-best 29 goals,
scored what would be his lone goal of the contest with 2:51 left in the
opening quarter on a helper from Collins. Doneger opened the second quarter
with the first goal of his career day to make it a three-goal game again.
After a Cornell goal by freshman Joe Boulukos with just over 10 minutes
left in the first half made it a 6-4 game in Princeton's favor, the Tigers
would put the game away with seven straight goals. Boyle scored the first
two goals of the stretch and Doneger recorded the next five, all on assists
from Boyle, to take a commanding 13-4 advantage halfway through the third
quarter. Cornell outscored the Tigers 4-2 in the final period, but the
deficit would be too much to handle.
Boyle tied a career-high with his seven assists to up his nation-leading
total to 37. Trevenen had a four-point day with two goals and two assists.
Boulukos, Pittard and Redd each had two goals for the Big Red and senior
tri-captain J.P. Schalk added three assists.
Cornell will return to action on Saturday, April 26, when it closes out its
Ivy season with a contest at Brown beginning at 2 p.m.
