Saturday, at the Big Green's Memorial Field, the Quakers were the ones who built up a large lead -- and it was the Big Green who staged the stirring comeback.
The end result was the same as last year, though. Penn scored, this time just 28 seconds into overtime, and emerged victorious, 9-8. With the win, the Quakers (5-3, 3-1 Ivy) have now defeated Dartmouth three straight years, all of them in one-goal games.
Garvey Heiderman was the ultimate hero in this contest; he finished a feed from Craig Andrzejewski just 28 seconds into the extra session, after the Quakers had won the faceoff and taken a timeout to set the offense. For Heiderman, it marked the second time he has ended an Ivy League contest in overtime -- he also had the game-winner last year against Yale.
Andrzejewski had three goals to go with his game-winning assist, and Alex Weber also scored three times. Freshman Corey Winkoff had two assists, while Al Kohart and J.J. Lian each contributed a goal and an assist.
Penn looked like it might have this one in the bag early, taking a 7-1 lead during the second quarter.
After Dartmouth's Brian Koch scored the opening goal five minutes into the game, Penn struck with seven unanswered bridging the first and second quarters. The Quakers scored four unassisted goals in the rest of the first quarter, from Weber, Kohart, Lian and Andrzejewski. In the second, Weber scored off a Kohart feed, Andrzejewski finished a Winkoff dish, and then notched his third of the day off a Lian feed. That gave Penn a 7-1 lead with seven minutes left before halftime.
Dartmouth (4-5, 0-2) righted the ship, holding Penn scoreless the remainder of the half and getting two of the goals back before the break on goals by Jonathan Livadas and Josh Gillam. Gillam then scored the only two goals of the third quarter, and as the fourth began the score was 7-5, Penn.
The Quakers finally broke a 28-minute scoring drought with 8:51 left in the final stanza, when Andrzejewski scored off a Winkoff feed to make it 8-5. Dartmouth got that goal back less than a minute later, when Ari Sussman scored unassisted, and then with less than three minutes left in the game the Big Green scored twice in a 43-second span to tie the game. The goals came from Jimmy Mullen and Tim Daniels (his first of the season).
Dartmouth won the faceoff after that, but a turnover gave the ball back to Penn which got off a pair of shots before the end of regulation.
Penn is back in action Tuesday night, traveling to Princeton to take on the Tigers at 8 p.m. The game will be televised live nationally on CBS College Sports, formerly known as College Sports Television (CSTV), the first of three televised games the Quakers will have in the next month. |
