The Game Story:
BROOKLANDVILLE, MD (February 28, 2004) - Delby Powless (Hagersville, Ontario) and junior Leif Blomquist (Long Beach, NY) combined for five goals and three assists as the 14th-ranked Rutgers men's lacrosse team (1-0) outlasted 20th-ranked Dartmouth, 13-9, in the season-opener for both team at St. Paul's School in Brooklandville, MD.

Powless, Rutgers' leading scorer last season with 32 goals and four assists, paced a well-balanced offense that saw eight different players score goals. The senior attacker, a preseason All-America selection, netted three goals, while Blomquist added two goals and a team-high three assists.

Sophomore goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) had a career-high 22 saves for the Scarlet Knights. In his first collegiate game, freshman Chris Doctor (Skaneateles, NY) had two goals and an assist. RU also received goals from senior Tim White (Rockville Center, NY), junior Jamie Lovejoy (Holbrook, NY), sophomore John Flanagan (Smithtown, NY), sophomore Brett Mooney (Springfield, PA) and junior Dan Achatz (Seaford, NY).

Freshman Colin Checchio (Wayne, PA) had an assist, along with senior Joe Duncan (Mountain Lakes, NJ), senior Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) and freshman Josh Ashcraft (Carthage, NY).

With the game tied at 5-5 at halftime, Rutgers erupted for seven unanswered goals in the third period to take a 12-5 lead into the fourth quarter. The run came against Dartmouth goalie Andrew Goldstein, a preseason All-America selection.

Today's victory marks the second straight year Rutgers has won its season opener. Last year, a 10-9 overtime triumph against Towson propelled the Scarlet Knights to a 7-0 start.

The Scarlet Knights return to action next Saturday, March 6, when it hosts Delaware at 1:00 p.m.
