| | | | Current Record : (8-2) | Current Record : (2-6) | | | | Team Page For 2004 | Team Page For 2004 | | | | | | The Game Story: | NEWARK, DE -- Senior Ryan Metzbower scored two of his three goals in the final 2:42 of the game, including the game-clincher with 49 seconds left to play, as the 18th ranked University of Delaware rallied to down Hofstra 12-10 in a Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse game Saturday night at Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens (8-2, 1-0 CAA), who posted their third straight win for the season but won their first ever CAA contest in 12 tries over three seasons, trailed 10-8 with 3:43 left to go, but came up with a furious rally to hand the Pride (2-5, 0-1 CAA) their fifth straight loss. The Hens downed Hofstra for the first time since the 2000 season after five straight losses in the series.
Metzbower, who scored two late goals to lead Delaware's 7-6 comeback win over Air Force March 20, was the hero again as he came up big twice in the final minutes. He and junior Joe Trentzsch each scored three goals for the Hens while Matt Alrich and Andy Hipple (right) both scored twice, and Cam Howard added a goal and one assist. The Hens, who converted just 1 of 8 extra man opportunities on the night, held a commanding 54-22 advantage in shots and won 15 of 25 faceoffs.
Hofstra, which has played one of the nation's top non-conference schedules, lost its fifth straight game. Chris Unterstein led the Pride with two goals and three assists while Ryan Miller added two goals and an assist and John Keysor scored twice. Goalkeeper Matthew Southard posted 16 saves.
Neither team ever led by more than three goals the entire game and that was the Blue Hens, who jumped out to leads of 4-1 late in the first quarter and 5-2 midway through the second quarter. But Hofstra rallied back to cut the Delaware halftime lead to 5-4 as Keysor and David Schwartzberg scored in the final eight minutes of the half.
The third quarter featured two ties but the Hens headed into the final stanza up 7-6 when Metzbower scored his first goal of the game with 4:29 left in the stanza.
The wild final quarter featured three ties, two lead changes, and five goals in the final four minutes before the Hens finally clinched the win. Hofstra took an 8-7 lead with 12:06 left on a goal by Miller, but the Hens came back to tie it on a goal by Howard with 7:49 left. Hofstra then took control as Miller fed Don Scott for a goal with 6:25 remaining and scored himself off an Unterstein assist with 3:43 remaining to give the Pride a 10-8 lead.
But Delaware rallied as Metzbower scored with 2:42 left to cut the lead to 10-9 and Alrich scored off a feed from Ryan Overs just 29 seconds later to tie the game at 10-10. Metzbower then put the Hens up for good when he scored an unassisted goal with just 49 seconds remaining. Trentzsch scored an extra-man goal on an open net just 30 seconds later to clinch the win for the Hens.
