goals in a 7-0 Loyola third-quarter run as the No. 8 Greyhounds won their 19th
straight season-opening game and the first game of the Bill Dirrigl era,
defeating No. 21 Delaware 17-12 before 1,300 at Rullo Stadium Saturday
afternoon.
The game was tied at five at halftime and 7-7 after Ryan Metzbower's goal for
Delaware (0-1, 0-1 CAA) with 8:04 left in the third quarter, but the Greyhounds
(1-0, 1-0 CAA) would take control of the game three minutes later. Stephen
Brundage's goal with 5:20 left started a three-goal Loyola run in a 36-second
span, capped by another Brundage goal with 4:44 left that gave the Greyhounds a
10-7 advantage.
Joey Case (two goals) and Fink then scored late third-quarter goals to give
Loyola a 12-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter, and Fink scored consecutive
extra-man goals early in the final period to put the Greyhounds ahead 14-7.
Metzbower finally broke a 14-minute Delaware scoreless string 40 seconds later,
but the Blue Hens could not get any closer than five goals from there.
Fink, who scored four goals all of last season, was one of nine different
Greyhounds to score a goal. Michael Sullivan had three, Summers, Brundage and
Case each had two and freshmen Parker Adams, Matt White, John Halip and Chris
Einhorn each had one. Loyola outshot Delaware 50-34 and had 45 groundballs to
just 28 for the Blue Hens.
Metzbower, who missed last season due to an ACL injury, led Delaware with four
goals, while Andy Hipple had three goals and four assists. The Blue Hens stayed
in the game thanks to an outstanding 7-for-11 performance on extra-man
situations.
Delaware goalie David Mullen had 10 first-half saves and 14 overall before
being pulled late in the second half. Mark Bloomquist had 12 saves for Loyola,
which defeated Delaware for the 17th straight time dating back to the 1973
season.
