St. Mary’s for a 13-3 men’s lacrosse victory Tuesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
Deckelbaum (Owings Mills/Owings Mills, MD), who was coming off a career-best three goal effort in Delaware’s 10-6 win over Rutgers Saturday, doubled the effort as he helped Delaware improve to 6-0, continuing the team’s best start since going 8-0 to start the 1999 season when the Hens advanced to the NCAA tournament quarterfinals. Delaware, which won the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, is ranked as high as No. 11 for the first time since a No. 11 ranking in April, 2004.
Deckelbaum's six goals is the most by a UD player since Sean Carney tallied six vs. Towson in 1999.
Delaware, which outshot the Mountaineers 56-25, also got a goal and an assist from All American Jordan Hall while Marty Kupprion added a goal and an assist and Cam Howard extended his point-scoring streak to 10 straight games with one assist. All-American Alex Smith, the nation’s faceoff leader in 2005, won 16 of 20 faceoffs and also scored a goal while goalkeeper Tommy Scherr recorded seven saves for the winners.
Mt. St. Mary’s, which opened the season with a 16-9 loss at Bucknell Feb. 28, dropped to 0-2. Eric Seifert, Matt Warner, and Benjamin Mundorf each scored goals while starting goalkeeper Joe Zolezzi recorded 18 saves. The Mountaineers were the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament runners-up last season.
Delaware has now defeated Mt. St. Mary’s in all meetings, winning the nine by an average of six goals per game. The 10-goal advantage was the second largest win margin in the series.
The game was a battle early. Delaware scored the only goal of the opening quarter on a tally by Hall 2:10 into the game and went up 2-0 when Dan Hechtkopf scored 59 seconds into the second stanza. But the Mountaineers cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Mundorf with 10:02 left in the half.
Then Deckelbaum took over. The junior lefthander, who now has 13 goals on the season, followed with a natural hat trick as he tallied three straight times in a span of four minutes and 45 seconds to give Delaware a 5-1 lead at halftime.
Smith won the second half faceoff and scored nine seconds into the quarter to up Delaware’s lead to 6-1, but Mt. St. Mary’s cut the lead to 6-3 early in the second half as Seifert and Warner scored two minutes apart.
But that was the last time Mt. St. Mary’s would score the rest of the day as the Hens held them in check for the final 23 minutes of action. Deckelbaum answered that Mountaineer run with two straight goals by himself to up the lead to 8-3 and Delaware finished the game off by outscoring Mt. St. Mary’s 6-0 in the final quarter. |
