| The Game Story: | PISCATAWAY, NJ - A six goal first quarter propelled the Rutgers men's lacrosse team (3-0) to an 11-6 victory over Delaware
(1-2) today at the Rutgers Astroturf Field. This marks the first time since the 1984 season that Rutgers has started a season
with three consecutive victories.
After Andy Hipple opened the scoring for the Blue Hens with 12:25 left in the first quarter, the Scarlet Knights reeled off six
consecutive goals to take a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. The six goals were the highest RU has scored in a
single quarter this season and matches the most scored in the Jim Stagnitta era. The team also tallied six goals in a single
quarter on three occasions last season.
The pace slowed down in the second quarter, with each team scoring just once. Delaware fought back to cut the lead to 7-4
with 13:20 left in the third quarter, but Rutgers sealed the game by scoring two consecutive goals in the span of 1:29 to
stretch the lead to 9-4.
Junior Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) led the way with three goals in the contest, while juniors Delby Powless (Hagersville,
Ontario) and Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) and senior Nick Schmidt (Hicksville, NY) added two goals apiece.
Apel now leads the team with 10 points (5 G, 5 A), while Powless (8 G, 1 A) and sophomore Leif Blomquist (Long Beach,
NY) (2 G, 7 A) each have nine points. Blomquist dished out three assists against Delaware to tie his career high, while
freshman Austin Rodgers (Towson, MD) netted his first career goal against the Blue Hens.
In net, freshman Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) continued his outstanding play with 12 saves. He holds a 6.00 goal against
average and a .705 save percentage through three games.
Rutgers will return to action on Wednesday, March 5, against Saint Joseph's. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the
Astroturf Field.
