| | | | Current Record : (4-0) | Current Record : (0-2) | | | | Team Page For 2006 | Team Page For 2006 | | | | | | The Game Story: | NEWARK, DE -- Alex Smith (right) set a new NCAA record by winning all 21 of his faceoffs and Cam Howard collected six points for the second straight game as No. 13 ranked University of Delaware overpowered Wagner for a 16-2 men’s lacrosse victory Tuesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.
Smith, a junior All-American from Timonium, MD (Boy’s Latin HS) who led the nation in faceoff percentage a year ago by winning nearly 71 percent of the time, was perfect on the afternoon as he won all 21 of his tries to break the mark of 20 for 20 by Army’s Alex Garn vs. Lafayette in 2001. Smith, who entered the game having won 43 of 60 faceoffs (71.7 percent) this year, also scooped up 14 groundballs on the day.
Howard, a junior from Wilmington, DE (Tatnall HS), who was coming off a career-high five-goal, one-assist performance in Saturday’s 9-7 win over Yale, scored two goals, dished out four assists, and reached the 100-point plateau for his career as the Blue Hens remained unbeaten on the season at 4-0, the team’s best start since going 8-0 on the way to an NCAA quarterfinal berth in 1999.
Howard, a two-time first team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection, became the 27th player in UD history to reach the 100-point mark with his 43 goals and 58 assists. He was one of 11 Delaware players to score vs. Wagner as Beau Davis had a career-high three goals, Dan Deckelbaum added two goals and an assist, and Marty Kupprion tallied twice to up his team-leading total to 11. All-American Jordan Hall also had a goal and three assists and Vincent Giordano scored a goal and dished out one assist for the winners.
Delaware overcame 28 turnovers by holding a commanding 51-5 edge in shots and a 47 17 advantage in groundballs. Wagner committed 33 turnovers for the game.
Wagner, which was coming off a season-opening 13-3 loss to Quinnipiac Saturday, fell to 0-2 on the season and extended its road losing streak to 13 games since the 2004-05 season. Tom Marchetti and Andrew Daly scored the Seahawk goals while goalkeeper Chris Sochacki recorded 15 saves in 45 minutes of work.
The Blue Hens wasted little time in taking control of the game. Howard scored a goal off a feed from Deckelbaum just 59 seconds into the contest and fed Kupprion for another goal just two minutes later. Delaware led 4-0 after the first period and upped the lead to 8 0 before the Seahawks got on the board with a goal by Marchetti with 8:10 left in the half. Chris Hichborn and Hall closed the half with goals to give UD a 10-1 lead at intermission.
Delaware outscored Wagner 6-0 in the third quarter, including four goals in one stretch of two minutes and 45 seconds, to take a 16-1 lead into the final quarter. Wagner capped the scoring on a goal by Daly with 11:29 left to play. |
