| | | | Current Record : (10-4) | Current Record : (2-11) | | | | Team Page For 2005 | Team Page For 2005 | | | | | | The Game Story: | NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Jordan Hall (right) exploded for a career-high five goals and Dave Powers and Andy Hipple each scored two goals each as the No. 19 ranked University of Delaware men's lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 13-6 win over St. John's Saturday night at rainy Rullo Stadium.
Hall, who was named the Milt Roberts Day Game Most Valuable Player, scored three of his goals in the first half, including two in the second period as the Hens broke away for a 7-4 lead. The Colonial Athletic Association's leading scorer, Hall upped his season marks to 42 points on 26 goals and 16 assists.
Delaware (10-4) won its third straight game and claimed its sixth win in the last seven games heading into this week's CAA Tournament. The Blue Hens, the CAA regular season champion, will be the No. 1 seed and host No. 4 Hofstra in the semifinalsl May 4 at 7 p.m. at Rullo Stadium. Should the Hens win, they would face either Towson or Villanova May 7 at home at 7 p.m. for the championship. The Hens hit the 10-win mark for the second straight year and for the 10th time in school history.
St. John's, which revived its program this season after dropping the sport following the 1994 campaign, dropped its eighth straight game and finished the year with a mark of 2-11. Justin O'Donnell and Jack Rosson each scored twice for the Red Storm while goalkeeper Dave Saccente turned back 17 shots.
Delaware, which outshot St. John's 50-27, had seven different players score a goal on Senior Night. Powers also added two assists, Hipple recorded an assist, and Cam Howard had a goal and two assists.
The Red Storm scored the only goal of the first quarter when Rosson tallied with 2:52 left in the stanza, but the teams then combined for 10 second quarter goals with the Hens outscoring St. John's 7-3 to take a 7-4 lead into intermission.
The Red Storm led 2-1 midway through the second period before Howard led a 3-0 run that gave the Hens the lead for good at 4-2 with 5:53 left in the half. The sophomore scored his only goal with 8:05 left, 10 seconds later fed Bobby West for another score, then assisted on Hall's second goal with 5:53 remaining. Hall scored another goal one minute late and Hipple scored his first goal with 1:21 left to give the Hens the 7-4 lead at intermission.
A goal by St. John's Tom Michaelsen just under two minutes into the third quarter cut the lead to 7-5, but the Hens answered with three straight goals, going up 10-5 with 13:21 remaining on Hall's fourth tally of the game
