| | | | Current Record : (9-5) | Current Record : (4-10) | | | | Go to team page > | Go to team page > | | | | | | The Game Story: | NEWARK, DE -- Eight different University of Delaware players recorded multiple-goal efforts led by Martin Cahill’s (at right) three-goal, three-assist performance as the Blue Hens pounded Robert Morris 20-5 in a Colonial Athletic Association men’s lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at sun-drenched Rullo Stadium.
The Blue Hens (9-5, 3-2 CAA) posted their biggest winning margin and goal total of the season and moved closer to gaining one of four berths in the upcoming CAA Tournament semifinals April 30 at home sites. A win over Sacred Heart in next week’s regular season finale will clinch a playoff spot for the Blue Hens and combined with a win by Villanova over Drexel next Saturday will clinch second place and a home playoff berth for Delaware.
Delaware head coach Bob Shillinglaw set an NCAA all-divisions record as he coached his 511th game all-time, breaking the mark of 510 set by Jack Emmer, who coached between 1970 and 2005 at Cortland State, Washington & Lee, and Army. Shillinglaw is now 273-238 in his 33rd season as a college head coach and ranks No. 4 on the active coaching wins list.
The Blue Hens, who are now 3-0 all-time vs. Robert Morris and have outscored the Colonials by a combined 58-12 margin, got almost everyone into the act Saturday as eight different players scored two or more goals.
In addition to Cahill’s six-point effort, Vince Giordano had three goals and an assist, Cam Howard and Pat Lombard each contributed two goals and two assists, Curtis Dickson and D.J. Widlake each scored twice and dished out an assist, and John Austin and Beau Davis each scored twice.The 20 goals were themost scored by a Delaware since a 20-5 win over Manhattan last season.
Dickson, who upped his season goal total to 43, extended his goal-scoring streak to 23 straight games, the fourth longest in school history. Howard upped his career assist total to 100, becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach that milestone.
Robert Morris (4-10, 0-5 CAA), which suffered its seventh straight loss, got a goal and an assist from Andrew Watt with Corbyn Tao-Brambleby, Dan Kerch, Trevor Moore, and Michael Fleming scoring the other goals. Robert Morris won the faceoff battle 15-14 and had just one few groundballs than Delaware (38-37) but the Blue Hens outshot the Colonials by a wide 45-29 margin.
Robert Morris scored the game’s first goal just 2:40 in when Tao-Brambleby tallied, but Delaware reeled off seven straight goals, including three by Cahill, to take control at 7-1. The Blue Hens took an 8-2 lead into halftime and outscored Robert Morris 6-1 in the third quarter to push the margin to 14-3. The Hens tacked on the first six goals of the fourth quarter, including two by Lombard, to go up 20-3 before the Colonial scored twice in the final seven minutes.
Delaware honored its 12 seniors prior to the game and at halftime recognized approximately 70 former Blue Hen players who returned as part of the 60 years of Delaware men’s lacrosse celebration. |
