In the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL), the Pioneers finish with a 4-1 record tying the squad with No. 19 Notre Dame and No. 15 Ohio State for the conference title. The Buckeyes win the tiebreaker by virtue of goals allowed. Freshman Adam Swain (West Simsbury, Conn.) led all scorers with two goals and an assist for three points. The Denver "D" prevailed throughout the afternoon and stuffed each of the Falcons' extra man opportunities. The Falcons looked to play the role of the spoiler early in the game with the first two goals. Freshman Adam Miller (Columbus, Ohio) finally got the Crimson and Gold on the board at 8:43 when he picked up the ball from behind the net and cut in to beat the goalie high. The last goal of the quarter came just over five minutes later when sophomore Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) capitalized on a pass from sophomore Darren Sasaki-Scanlon (Norwalk, Conn.) for his 21st goal of the season. Denver's first lead came at 13:54 when sophomore Greer Hanlon (Libertyville, Ill.) drew an extra defender and passed back to open freshman Adam Swain (West Simsbury, Conn.) who fired in a laser from 30 feet out. Air Force tied the game yet again before freshman Greg Wiegel (Port Republic, Md.) drove in a shot at 5:48 to re-take the lead. Freshman Adam Goodwin (Columbus, Ohio) and junior Jeff Biggs (St. Louis, Mo.) followed suit with tallies at 2:21 and 0:51, respectively to give Denver a 5-3 lead going into the break. The third quarter turned into a defensive battle, with the Falcons scoring the only goal to pull within one. The Pioneers were out-shot 12-3 but senior co-captain Jeff Nunziato (Latham, N.Y.) held his squad in the game with five saves. Denver came out firing in the fourth, with Biggs and Davidson each scoring their second goal of the afternoon within a two-minute span to give their team an 8-4 advantage. The Falcons would find the back of the net one last time (8:17), but the Pioneers capped off the win with one last goal at 5:29 when Swain bounced in an outside shot. The 2003 season held many highlights for Denver, including the university's longest Division I winning streak (five) and Nunziato becoming the Pioneers' fifth all-time leader in saves (339). With a strong returning class Denver will look to build on this year's achievements and strive for their first NCAA tournament bid in 2004.
