| The Game Story: | DENVER - The University of Denver men's lacrosse team pulled off its greatest win of the season today at
Pioneer Field, downing the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 7-6. The Denver "D" held strong with
narrow one-and-two goal leads for the majority of the game while killing off every OSU man-advantage (five
attempts). Sophomore Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) led the Pioneers in scoring with two goals and
controlled the face-offs by winning nine of his 16 attempts (.563). With the team's fourth straight-victory,
Denver climbs to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the Great Western lacrosse League (GWLL). The Buckeyes' first
conference loss (3-1) drops their overall record to 7-3.
Ohio State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Davidson breached OSU's netminder at 5:54. Just under three
minutes later senior Mike Kenlay (Wilmette, Ill.) tied the game up (3:05) with his 10th goal of the year to
end the quarter in a 2-2 deadlock, despite the Pioneers carrying a 10-5 shot advantage.
The Buckeyes soon re-took the lead with a goal at the 12:58 mark. The Crimson and Gold answered the call
though and went on a three-goal tear to put the team up 5-3. Davidson earned his second tally of the
afternoon at 10:36 to kick things off, then sophomore Darren Sasaki-Scanlon (Norwalk, Conn.) and freshman
Geoff Snider (Calgary, Alberta) rode the momentum with goals at 8:26 and 7:09, respectively.
The defensive units took over in the third, and both teams only found the back of the net once. Denver's
back-line was highlighted by a seven-minute stand mid-way through the quarter where Ohio State set up shot
outside the Pioneer goal with sustained pressure. Freshman Adam Swain (West Simsbury, Conn.) recorded the
only DU goal at 2:23 to set up a 6-4 finale.
The final quarter again opened up with the Buckeyes scoring first, with a goal at 14:36 to pull within one.
Denver senior Mike Petrucci (Roseville, Mich.) responded at 11:24 though, with an unbelievable breakaway goal
where the long-stick defenseman picked up the ball just outside Denver's box before storming past all OSU
players and freezing the Buckeye goalie with a low, screaming shot. Ohio State would score one last time at
6:57 but the Pioneer offense was able to drain the clock for the remainder of the game with multiple long
possessions.
Denver will play again next weekend when the squad travels to the east coast to face-off against GWLL foe
Fairfield on Friday, April 26 (5:30 p.m.) before heading to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the 2003 Atlantic
Coast Conference champion and No. 4 ranked Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, April 28 (5:00 p.m.)
