The Game Story:
DENVER – Junior Cliff Smith (Surrey, B.C.) led the Pioneers with four goals and two assists as the University of Denver men’s lacrosse team defeated Bellarmine 14-12 at Barton Lacrosse Stadium Sunday afternoon.

“A win is a win,” head coach Jamie Munro said. “It wasn’t pretty, but we did what we had to do. It’s great to be heading into the Ohio State game 3-0 in the conference.”

Denver (9-4, 3-0 GWLL) honored its five seniors in the final home game of the 2008 season. Andrew Bourke (Denver, Colo.), Brett Koll (Fort Collins, Colo.), Carlos Navarro (Dallas, Texas), Dustin Palmer (Greenwood Village, Colo.) and Jon Paulson (Flemington, N.J.) played their final game at Barton Lacrosse Stadium.

Bellarmine (6-6, 0-4 GWLL) was led by Shane Anderson, who had two goals.

Denver jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening 1:30 with goals by Paulson and Koll, but Bellarmine tied it up before the end of the first quarter.

The Knights took a 4-2 lead in the second after holding the Pioneers scoreless for 22:46, since the 1:30 mark of the first period, but junior Joey Murray (Denver, Colo.) brought Denver within one on his 10th goal of the season with 5:44 remaining in the half.

Murray tied the game with his second consecutive goal just 1:22 later, and sophomore Ilija Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.) buried a pass from sophomore John Dickenson (Dallas, Texas) to give the Pioneers the 5-4 lead at the 12:05 mark of the second quarter.

Smith tallied a pair of goals early in the third, but Bellarmine answered each time Smith increased the DU lead to two. Freshman Jamie Lincoln (St. Cathariens, Ontario) broke a 7-7 tie with 6:58 to play and registered his second consecutive goal just 42 seconds later. Smith recorded his third goal of the game with 5:51 remaining before the Knights made it 10-8.

Three DU goals by Lincoln, Murray and Smith in the first 6:33 of the fourth quarter gave the Pioneers a 13-8 five-goal lead. Freshman Ryan Driver (Centennial, Colo.) netted his first collegiate goal, and DU held off Bellarmine despite giving up three goals in the final 2:10.

Junior goaltender Austin Konkel (Aurora, Colo.) registered eight saves for DU while Bellarmine’s David Haas recorded 10. Scott Bowles also saw time in net for the Knights, recording four saves.

The Pioneers close out their regular season with a pair of road games. On Saturday, April 19, DU faces Ohio State at 9 a.m. MT at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio before traveling to Air Force on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m. to end the regular season.
