| The Game Story: | DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Matt Monfett registered eight points on four
goals and four assists to lead sixth-ranked Duke to a 15-7 victory over
visiting Dartmouth in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday
afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils improve to 3-1 on the year while the Big Green falls to
3-1.
Duke jumped on top 3-0 with three goals in the first 2:36 of the game.
Monfett scored just four seconds into the contest on a feed from fellow
freshman Matt Rewkowski while Kevin Cassese and Alex Lieske also scored
in the stretch. Cassese got things going for Duke early in the second
period with an unassisted goal at the 13:50 mark before Kevin Brennan's
extra man goal pushed the lead to 5-0 just 45 seconds later.
The Blue Devils went ahead 6-0 on Lieske's second goal of the day, and
Monfett increased the advantage to seven goals with a score from Brennan
at the 8:25 mark. Dartmouth got on the scoreboard with 3:16 remaining
in the half when Matt Heineman found the back of the net, and Lieske's
third goal of the opening 30 minutes gave Duke an 8-1 lead at
intermission.
In the third quarter, Dartmouth's Darren Yulfo and Connor Price
sandwiched goals around Lieske's fourth of the day as Duke led 9-3
heading into the final period.
Duke scored four unanswered goals to begin the fourth quarter before
Dartmouth's Casey Burlage scored at the 8:03 mark to cut the lead to
13-4. After Monfett tallied at the 7:32 mark, the Big Green rattled off
three straight goals before Duke's Matt Ganes rounded out the day's
scoring with 2:42 left in the game.
Lieske finished the game with four goals and one assist while Brennan
contributed one goal and three assists. Seven different players scored
for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth goalkeeper Mike Gault was credited with 17 saves while Duke's
A.J. Kincel made 10 saves.
Duke remains at home to host North Carolina on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
while Dartmouth travels to meet Sacred Heart on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
