The Blue Devils improve to 2-0 while the Pioneers fall to 1-2.
"This was a really tough weekend from the standpoint that we played two good teams," Duke head coach John Danowski said. "I'm really proud of the way we responded today after such an emotional day yesterday. We got goals from a lot of different people all weekend long, and we needed that to be successful."
Duke jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter thanks to goals from Bo Carrington and Max Quinzani and seven saves by Dan Loftus. Denver's Ilija Gajic tallied an extra man goal at the 13:37 mark to get the Pioneers on the board, and Payton countered by winning the ensuing face-off and scoring an unassisted goal to make the score 3-1. Three minutes later, Greer's goal from Gibbs Fogarty pushed the lead to 4-1. The two teams split four goals over the final nine minutes of the half, sending the squads into intermission with Duke ahead, 6-3.
Gajic fed Brett Koll for a goal early in the third quarter to pull Denver to within 6-4, but the Blue Devils responded with goals by Greer and Quinzani less than two minutes apart for an 8-4 advantage with 7:19 left in the period. The Pioneers stayed tough, again trading two goals through the end of the quarter and trailed 10-6 heading into the final period.
The Pioneers would trim the margin to three goals on three occasions in the final 15 minutes, but Duke answered with tallies from Matt Danowski, Payton and Carrington each time to preserve the four-goal cushion.
Duke was stellar at the X, securing 18-of-26 face-offs on the afternoon. Mike Catalino was a force by winning five-of-eight draws and added six ground balls and one goal. Nick O'Hara added nine ground balls and his first goal of the year while Quinzani and Carrington had two goals each. Loftus posted 14 saves and allowed nine goals in 60 minutes of action.
For Denver, Gajic finished with three goals and one assist while Koll added two goals and three assists. Jeb Hollingsworth carded 12 saves while surrendering 13 goals. |
