Duke held Loyola without a goal for the final 39:31 as the tenth-ranked
Blue Devils defeated the No. 8 Greyhounds, 10-4, in a men's lacrosse
game played at Koskinen Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Rewkowski's second goal, an extra-man goal, tied the game at 4-4 1:28
into the second half, and a Devin Wray goal 2:06 later put the Blue
Devils (4-1) ahead for good at 5-4. Goals by Kevin Brennan and Rewkowski
in a 37-second span late in the third quarter gave Duke a 7-4 lead, and
Ben Fenton then scored both of his goals in the fourth quarter as Duke
pulled away.
Loyola (3-1) led 4-2 midway through the second quarter and 4-3 at
halftime but could not get any of their 11 second-half shots past Duke
goalie A.J. Kincel, who had 12 saves. The Greyhounds took a two-goal
lead on a Stephen Brundage extra-man goal with 9:31 to go in the second
quarter but did not score after that.
Brennan had two goals and an assist for Duke, which outshot Loyola
38-23. The Blue Devils also defeated the Greyhounds for the first time
since the series resumed between the teams in the 2000 season.
Gunnar Goettelmann added a goal and an assist for Loyola, which finished
just 1-for-5 on extra-man opportunities, including an unsuccessful
two-man-up situation in the third quarter. Chris Summers and Ryan Fisher
also scored goals for the Greyhounds, who finished just 13-for-26 on
clear attempts.
Duke took a early two-goal lead midway through the first quarter thanks
to two goals in a 23-second span by Rewkowski and Brennan, but the
Greyhounds rebounded to tie the game after the first quarter thanks to a
goal off a loose-ball situation from Summers and a one-on-one move by
Goettelmann from behind the goal with just four seconds left on the
first-quarter clock.
