The Game Story:
DURHAM, N.C. - In the highest scoring Maryland/Duke game since 1983, the No. 2 Terps outscored the No. 6 Blue Devils, 17-12, at Koskinen Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Joe Walters (Rochester, N.Y.) led the way for Maryland as he had four goals and two assists to tie his career high of six points.

With the game tied at four apiece with 10:54 left in the first half, Maryland ripped off four goals in a row to take a 8-4 halftime lead, which they would never relinquish. The run started off a goal by senior captain Paul Gillette (Millersville, Md.) off a face-off win. Senior J.R. Bordley (Vienna, Va.) scored the next two goals to put Maryland up 7-4. Freshman Michael Phipps (Severna Park, Md.) finished the mini-run with his first career goal for the 8-4 halftime lead.

Maryland outscored the Blue Devils, 6-1, in the decisive second quarter after trailing 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. Combined with the 7-0 margin in the second quarter, the Terps have outscored their opponents 13-1 in the second period.

The game featured 11 different goal scorers for Maryland led by Walters and Bill McGlone (Swarthmore, Pa.) who tallied his first career hat trick along with two assists for a five-point game -- also a new career high. Bordley was the only other Maryland player to score in double-figures.

Eight Terps scored once -- many of which came in transition resulting the first career goals for defensive midfielders Peter Ellis (Ross, Calif.) and Ryan Lang (Northport, N.Y.). Also scoring their first career goals in the win were junior Dave Matz (Woodstock, Vt.) and freshman Mike Brown (West Hartford, Conn.) -- which closed out the scoring.

On defense, Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, Md.) made 10 saves in the win. Gillette and sophomore Xander Ritz (Wayne, Pa.) each had seven groundballs while senior All-American Chris Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.) had five cuased tunrovers for the Terps.

Duke was led by freshman Peter Lamade who had three goals. Fellow freshman Matt Danowski was limited to two goals -- by Passavia -- after netting 13 in his first two college games. Chris Haunss had a goal and five assists for a team-high six points.

With two teams that traditionally play low-scoring defensive games, the 17-12 outcome resulted in the most goals in the series since 1983 when Maryland beat the Blue Devils, 25-7. It was also Maryland's first win at Duke since 1998, when they beat the Devils, 15-9 on Feb. 28.

The No. 2 Terps return to action as they host their home opener against Towson next Saturday at Byrd Stadium, the game will be televised live on WMAR Channel 2 in Baltimore at 1 p.m.
