remaining in the first overtime lifted second-seeded and 12th-ranked
Duke to an 8-7 win over third-seeded and sixth-ranked Maryland in the
semifinals of the 2002 ACC Men's Lacrosse Tournament held Friday night
at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils, who defeated Maryland by a 9-8 count on March 3 in
Durham when Matt Monfett scored with two seconds left in the second
overtime period, improve to 6-5 on the season. Duke, the defending
league tournament champion, advances to meet top-seeded and number
one-ranked Virginia in the championship game on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. The
Terrapins, losers of four one-goal contests this season, fall to 7-4.
Duke was led by senior goalkeeper A.J. Kincel, who was credited with 21
saves on the night. His total fell three saves short of the ACC
Tournament record set by Duke's Carter Hertzberg against North Carolina
in the 1993 semifinals.
Maryland dominated the game statistically as Brian Carroll won 13-of-19
face-offs. The Terrapins finished the night with 21 more ground balls
(45-24) and 21 more shots (43-22).
Duke jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the opening quarter as Monfett and
Kevin Cassese sandwiched goals around a tally by Maryland's Ryan Moran.
The Terrapins then went on a 4-1 run with Mike LaMonica scoring twice in
the spurt as Maryland claimed a 5-3 lead at intermission.
In the second half, Duke received a goal from Alex Lieske while Moran
found the back of the net for Maryland before the Blue Devils scored
three straight goals to go ahead 7-6 with 10:04 remaining in the fourth
quarter on Kevin Brennan's tally. Maryland knotted the contest at 7-7
when Mike Mollot scored an extra-man goal with just under two minutes to
play.
Maryland won the face-off to begin the overtime session, and Mike
LaMonica banged a shot off the pipe with just over two minutes left.
Duke received an extra man opportunity with 36 seconds remaining to set
up a Monfett feed to a breaking Rewkowski in front of the net for the
game-winning goal.
Moran paced the Terrapin attack with three goals -- his second
three-goal outing against Duke this season -- while Mike LaMonica had
two goals. Lieske and Rewkowski each had two goals for the Blue Devils. |
