The Blue Devils' 10-0 start to the year is the best in school history, eclipsing the previous mark of 9-0 established by the 1999 team. Mount St. Mary's, a winner of three straight entering Tuesday's action, falls to 3-3.
Sophomore attackman Matt Danowski led the offensive charge for Duke with four goals and two assists while Kyle Dowd and Zack Greer chipped in three goals each. Greer's three tallies increased his NCAA-leading goal total to 32.
"We were fortunate to jump on top early today," said Duke head coach Mike Pressler. "We had a good overall performance. One thing this team hasn't done all season long is look ahead. Now we'll begin preparation for Ohio State, a team that beat us pretty good at their place last year."
Danowski and Dowd each had two goals as the Blue Devils sprinted to a 7-0 lead at the end of the first period, outshooting Mount St. Mary's by a 17-1 count in the opening 15 minutes. In the second quarter, Danowksi picked up two goals and two assists as Duke pushed the lead to 13-0 before the Mount received a man-up tally from Jason Werner at the 7:08 mark. Greer and Bret Thompson responded with goals in the final four minutes to send the teams into halftime with the Blue Devils ahead, 15-1.
Billy Jautze and Matt Warner opened the third quarter with consecutive goals to pull Mount St. Mary's to within 15-3, but Duke tallied six of the game's last eight goals to account for the final margin.
Duke goalkeeper Aaron Fenton allowed just one goal while making four saves in 30 minutes of work before giving way to Dan Loftus, who registered six second-half saves. Mount St. Mary's starter Dan Whitehurst surrendered 11 goals in 17:39 of action and was credited with four saves.
Duke's 21 goals are the most since the Blue Devils defeated Hobart, 22-6, in the opening round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament in Newark, Del.
Duke remains at home to take on Ohio State on Saturday at 1 p.m. while Mount St. Mary's travels to meet Siena on Saturday at 1 p.m. |
