The Game Story:
DURHAM, N.C. - Junior Austin Garrison scored two of his three goals in the fourth quarter to lead ninth-ranked North Carolina to a 9-7 win over fifth-ranked Duke in ACC men's lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C.

The Tar Heels improve to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the league while the Blue Devils fall to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. With the win, North Carolina picks up three points in the Carlyle Cup standings and now leads the all-sports competition by a 24-9.5 score.

Duke jumped on top 3-0 with three goals in the first 8:06 of the game. Matt Rewkowski tallied the first two goals on a pair of assists from Kevin Brennan, and Alex Lieske's unassisted goal pushed the lead to 3-0 at the 6:54 mark of the opening period. North Carolina got on the scoreboard when Tim Gosier found the back of the net with 5:35 remaining and Duke's Mack Hardaker scored with 1:21 left to close the first quarter scoring.

North Carolina pulled within 4-3 in the second period as Andrew Lucas and Garrison scored. The Tar Heels then took a 5-4 advantage in the third quarter when Pat Jackson's goal tied the contest at the 9:22 mark and Mike McCall's score with 6:33 remaining put North Carolina ahead. On the ensuing face-off, however, Duke's Kevin Cassese won the face-off, gained possession and raced to goal, scoring at the 6:26 mark to tie the game. Cassese then put Duke back on top with a goal from Rewkowski with just 1:16 remaining in the period.

North Carolina then used three unanswered goals to claim an 8-6 lead as Garrison, Jed Prossner and Bryan Will scored in the run. Lieske's goal from Cassese with 3:29 remaining pulled Duke within one goal, but Garrison added an insurance goal for the Tar Heels with just 1:14 left to play.

North Carolina goalkeeper Paul Spellman registered seven saves on the night while Duke's A.J. Kincel was credited for eight saves.

North Carolina now leads the all-time series over Duke, 34-21, and snaps the Blue Devils' four-game winning streak in the series.

Duke remains at home to host seventh-ranked Georgetown on Sunday at 2:30 while the Tar Heels host fifth-ranked Maryland on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
