Junior attackmen Brendan Mundorf (3g, 1a) and Andy Gallagher (2g, 1a) added plenty of power to the UMBC offense in the opening game. Senior midfielder Joe Cahill scored the other Retriever goal.
The Retrievers sprung out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Westervelt and Mundorf 1:18 apart midway through the first quarter. But Duke answered with four straight goals before Gallagher tallied with 1:53 remaining in the first half and Westervelt beat the halftime horn to knot the game at 4-4 at intermission.
Duke posted another 4-0 run to open the second half and would not be headed after that. But the Retrievers did creep back to within 9-7 on a Mundorf tally with 12:54 remaining. The Blue Devils responded with three straight goals to build a 12-7 advantage with 8:03 to play.
Duke outshot UMBC, 39-34, and won the ground ball battle, 38-23. Senior midfielder Luke Reilly collected a team high 8 ground balls for UMBC, while senior netminder Kevin Cepelak made 12 saves in the UMBC cage.
The Retrievers return to Baltimore and will face Ohio State at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field next Saturday at 1pm. The game will be televised live by WMAR-TV. |
