The Blue Devils improve to 1-0 while the Retrievers fall to 0-1. Duke improves to 12-2 in season-opening games under head coach Mike Pressler.
Duke jumped on top 2-0 in the first four minutes of play behind unassisted goals by Chris Haunss and Bret Thompson. After Brendan Mundorf's tally at the 8:24 mark brought UMBC within 2-1, Danowski scored three consecutive goals in less than five minutes as Duke took a 5-1 advantage into the second period.
In the second quarter, the Blue Devils outscored UMBC, 4-2, as Nick O'Hara, Ed Douglas, Peter Lamade and Danowski all found the back of the net for a 9-3 halftime lead. The Retrievers made a run in the third quarter when Drew Westervelt, Andy Gallagher and Franklin Berry scored goals while Duke managed a tally from Ryan Marshall, pulling UMBC to within 10-6.
Late in the third quarter, Duke responded to the UMBC spurt when Matt Zash scored an extra man goal to give the Blue Devils a five-goal cushion heading into the final period. UMBC would produce the only two goals of the fourth quarter on scores by Corey Warner and Mundorf.
Duke goalie Dan Loftus, a freshman making his collegiate debut, registered 12 saves including nine in the second half while his counterpart, UMBC's Kevin Cepelak, was credited with 13 saves, 11 of which came in the first 30 minutes.
Duke now leads the all-time series with UMBC, 14-3, and has won 10 straight over the Retrievers. |
