The Blue Devils improve to 8-0 on the year while Vermont falls to 2-2.
"This was a workmanlike performance," said Duke head coach Mike Pressler. "I thought we were very sound on the defensive end, but certainly lacked precision offensively. Vermont should be given some credit; their defensive unit is very solid. We're fortunate to be 8-0 at this point in the season, and we've got a very difficult opponent this weekend with a hot Georgetown team."
Vermont claimed a 1-0 lead less than one minute into the contest when Pete Hein tallied an unassisted goal. After Duke received goals from Zack Greer and Matt Danowski for a 2-1 Blue Devil advantage, the Catamounts pulled even with a transition tally by Chris Legare at the 8:28 mark of the opening period.
Flannery scored twice during a 4-0 run as Duke took a 6-2 lead on Ryan Marshall's goal with 7:09 left in the second period. Legare's second goal of the day on a pass from Jamie Kirk closed out the first half scoring and sent the teams into the lockerroom with Duke ahead, 6-3.
Kyle Dowd scored for Duke at the 7:52 mark of the third period for a 7-3 lead, and Greer, Bret Thompson and Flannery tallied fourth quarter goals to account for the final margin.
Greer finished with two goals and one assist, pushing his ACC-leading season totals to 26 goals and 30 points. Danowski chipped in one goal and three assists, and now leads the league with 15 assists on the year. Also for the Blue Devils, Nick O'Hara picked up a game-high seven ground balls while Dan Oppedisano won five-of-seven face-offs.
In goal, Vermont's Mike Gabel was solid with 13 total saves while his counterparts, Duke's Aaron Fenton and Dan Loftus, were credited for six and one saves, respectively.
Duke held the statistical edge on the afternoon, outshooting Vermont by a 37-16 count and securing 38 ground balls to the Catamounts' 22. Duke's defense also allowed just one goal in five Vermont man-up opportunities.
Duke travels to face fifth-ranked Georgetown on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Vermont remains on the road to face UMBC on Saturday at 1 p.m. |
