The Blue Devils improve to 8-2 while the Knights fall to 1-7.
Greer finished the day with five goals and two assists, and now has 102 goals in 38 career games at Duke. With one goal and a career-high five assists on the afternoon, Danowski became the 21st player in ACC history to reach 200 points, and currently ranks fifth on Duke's all-time scoring chart with 204 points on 109 goals and 95 assists. In addition, the Farmingdale, N.Y., native is five assists shy of becoming just the fifth player in ACC history to register 100 goals and 100 assists in a career.
After the teams traded goals in the opening three minutes of the game, Duke used a 5-1 run to claim a 6-2 lead on Greer's goal from Max Quinzani at the 3:22 mark of the opening quarter. Bellarmine's Bruce Tan scored with less than one minute left in the period to pull the Knights within 6-3, but the Blue Devils responded with three goals from Peter Lamade, Fred Krom and Terrence Molinari to open the second quarter and push ahead, 9-3.
Bryan Brown fed Adam Gardner for a goal at the 8:54 mark of the second period to make the score 9-4, and Duke then used a four-goal spurt to take a 13-4 advantage on Josh Coveleski's extra man goal from Ned Crotty with 6:09 left. Each team scored once before the quarter ended and the Blue Devils led 14-5 at intermission.
Coveleski, Quinzani and John Walsh tallied for the Blue Devils in the third frame while Ray Finnegan and Gardner countered for the Knights. The final period featured goals by Finnegan and Dylan MacDougal for Bellarmine and Crotty for Duke.
Joining Danowski and Greer as multiple-point scorers for Duke were Krom (2 goals & 1 assist), Quinzani (2 goals & 1 assist), Coveleski (2 goals & 1 assist), Crotty (2 goals & 1 assist) and Lamade (1 goal and 1 assist). Four Duke goalkeepers -- Dan Loftus, Rob Schroeder, Devon Sherwood and Max Wygod -- combined for 13 saves. Quinzani and Parker McKee each scooped up a team-high five ground balls.
Gardner and Finnegan paced the Knights with three goals apiece while MacDougal logged two tallies. J.C. Hutchens racked up 19 saves between the pipes while allowing 17 goals in 45 minutes of work.
Duke travels to meet Johns Hopkins next Saturday at 1 p.m. (ESPNU) while Bellarmine remains on the road to face Wagner on Tuesday at 1 p.m. |
