(N. Massapequa, N.Y.) made 21 saves, including six in the three overtime
periods, as the Fairfield men^Òs lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 14
Rutgers, 7-6 on Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium. The game ended in dramatic
fashion as Tim White scored an unassisted goal with 12 seconds to play in the
third overtime period to give the Scarlet Knights the victory. The game was the
first meeting between the two squads and was also the first triple overtime
game in Stag history. With the loss, Fairfield falls to 4-4 on the year while
Rutgers improves to 5-3 overall.
After a shaky first half, Fairfield clamped down defensively and dominated the
third and fourth quarters offensively, scoring five unanswered goals to tie the
game at six apiece and to send the contest into overtime. Freshman Mike Bocklet
(Katonah, N.Y.) started the rally, scoring off an assist from senior Matt
Baglio (Brightwaters, N.Y.) just over one minute into the third period before
senior Rory McCarthy (Camillus, N.Y.) tallied an unassisted goal at the nine
minute mark to cut the Rutgers lead to 6-3. The Stags then got back-to-back
goals in the final minute of the third as freshman Greg Downing (Auburn, N.Y.)
assisted on Bocklet^Òs second goal of the day before scoring an unassisted goal
himself to make the score 6-5.
Fairfield then tied the game at six apiece as senior Garret Bamann (Victor,
N.Y.) converted a pass from Downing at the 8:06 mark of the fourth quarter.
With less then a minute to play, Rutgers had two legitimate shots on goal, but
Gibbons made solid saves to send the game into overtime.
Rutger^Òs Delby Powless started the scoring in the game midway through the
first quarter as he took a feed from Colin Checcio to give the Scarlet Knights
a 1-0 lead. Rutgers then extended the lead to 3-0 with 1:02 remaining in the
first with tallies from Powless and Sean Battoni.
Baglio got the Stags on the board with the first goal of the second quarter at
the 11:27 mark, but Rutgers responded with back-to-back goals from Leif
Blomquist and Powless. Rutgers then converted on a man-up opportunity when
Powless scored on a feed from White to give the Scarlet Knights the 6-1 lead at
the break.
Senior Peter Vlahakis (Shoreham, N.Y.), who currently ranks third in the nation
in face-off winning percentage, dominated the category, winning 14-of-18
attempts in what was otherwise a very even contest. Rutgers outshot the Stags,
48-41, while Fairfield held the slight edge in ground balls, 28-27, and saves,
21-20.
Powless was the lead scorer on the day with four goals while Downing registered
three points off one goal and two assists and Bocklet tallied two goals for the
Stags.
Fairfield opens its conference slate this weekend, hosting Butler University on
Sunday, April 4 at 1 p.m.
