1, 4-1 ECAC) held No. 8 Rutgers (9-4, 2-2 ECAC) to its lowest scoring
output of the season in a crucial 8-4 victory today in ECAC men's lacrosse
action in Washington, D.C. It was the Scarlet Knights' second consecutive
loss in league play, while Georgetown finishes its ECAC slate with a 4-1
mark.
Rutgers fell behind, 2-0, four minutes into the action after Trevor Walker
scored 1:38 into the game and Walid Hajj added another goal 2:22 later.
Rutgers quickly got back into the game and tied the score with two goals in
a span of 1:49. Junior Tim White (Rockville Center, NY) scored RU's first
goal of the day at the 8:44 mark and Matt Apel (Bridgewater, NJ) tied the
score 1:49 later. GU's Jordan Vettoretti scored the first of his three
goals with 3:52 left in the quarter to give the Hoyas a 3-2 lead after the
first 15 minutes of play.
The defense dominated the second quarter as neither team was able to get a
shot past the goalies until just 2:47 remaining in the half, when RU junior
Delby Powless (Six Nations, Ontario) scored the first of his two goals off
an assist from White. With the score knotted at 3-3, Georgetown scored
with just over one minute left in the half to take a 4-3 lead into
intermission.
Georgetown held Rutgers to just one goal in the second half while scoring
four times, to secure the victory. The Hoyas scored the first two goals in
the third quarter, at 13:11 and 6:44, to take a 6-3 lead, but Powless cut
the lead to two, 6-4, with 4:49 left in the quarter. It would prove to be
the Scarlet Knights' final goal of the day, as the Hoya defense pitched a
shut out for the final 19:49, while adding two more tallies themselves.
Rutgers freshman goalie Greg Havalchak (Corning, NY) posted 12 saves in the
contest and has stopped as many or more shots than his counterpart in every
game this season. He now has 160 saves on the season. Georgetown goalie
Rich D'Andrea stopped nine shots.
Powless led Rutgers with two goals, while White had a goal and an assist.
Defender Dan Achatz (Seaford, NY) assisted on Powless' second goal to
record his first point of the season.
Rutgers will conclude the regular season against No. 4 Massachusetts on
Saturday, May 3, at Yurcak Field at 1:00 p.m. It will be Senior Day, as
eight seniors will be honored before their final game at Yurcak Field.
