Harvard bounced right back with a run of it’s own, shutting out the Big Green in the second period, going up 5-3 with eleven minutes to go in the third quarter. Dartmouth would not be denied and responded with nine goals in the final two periods for a 12-6 win on Senior Day in Cambridge. The win wraps up the 2008 season for both teams, Dartmouth with a record of 7-7, 3-3 Ivy and Harvard at 6-8, 1-5 Ivy.
Less than a minute into the game, junior Jon Livadas (Wilmington, Del.) picked up a Chad Gaudet (Burlington, Mass.) rebound and put Dartmouth up 1-0. Gaudet won the ensuing faceoff and the Green went on attack. Ari Sussman (New Haven, Conn.) found Brian Koch (New Haven, Conn.) in front of the goal for the second goal of the game at 12:41. Spreading the wealth around, Jimmy Mullen (Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) scored an unassisted goal 41 seconds later for the 3-0 lead. Harvard called a timeout to settle down and regroup. The break revitalized the Crimson, leading to five straight Harvard goals, including two by Dean Gibbons.
Livadas scored his second goal of the game to stem the tide and bring the Green within one with 6:22 left in the third. Less than a minute later Tim Daniels (Duxbury, Mass.) scored his seventh goal of the season to tie the game at five. Koch scored two of his team-high four goals back to back to end the third and open the fourth quarter. A slashing penalty on Tim McVeigh (Basking Ridge, N.J.) led to a man-up goal by Harvard’s Jesse Fehr, cutting the lead back to three at 9-6. That was it for the Crimson. Three unanswered goals by Dartmouth included Koch’s fourth, a man-up goal by Mullen with Sussman’s fourth assist of the day and a man-down goal by Ryan Orr (Great Falls, Va.) accounted for the final of 12-6.
Sophomore Michael Novosel (Somers, N.Y.) continued his outstanding play in goal for the Big Green, stopping 11 Crimson shots. Evan O’Donnell and Ted Skowronski combined for seven saves for Harvard.
Dartmouth scored on four of five man-up opportunities, won 13 of 22 faceoffs and held a narrow edge in shots, 35-33. Harvard won the groundball battle 16-14. |
