decision over the Harvard men's lacrosse team Wednesday afternoon on Jordan Field.
Freshman Sean Kane (Fairfax, VA) scored twice in the setback, with his second goal pulling
the Crimson within 6-5 with 5:46 to play in the third quarter. But the nationally-ranked
Minutemen countered with two quick strikes before the period ended and then added three
more insurance goals in the first nine minutes of the fourth quarter to gain an
insurmountable 11-5 advantage.
Senior Matt Primm (Westminster, MA) junior Jeff Gottschall (Swampscott, MA), and
freshman Steve Cohen (Syosset, NY) each contributed a goal and an assist for Harvard,
while senior Doug Logiigian (Huntington, NY) also tallied in the loss.
Harvard falls to 4-7, while UMass improves to 10-1.
UMass jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Cohen and Gootschall brought the Crimson even with 5:11 to play in the
opening period. The Minutemen pulled then in front 4-2, before Logigian rifled in a shot that made it 4-3 just before
halftime. Harvard held the better of the territorial play over the first 30 minutes, outshooting their foes by a 26-9 count.
While Massachusetts never surrendered the lead in the second half, Harvard kept up the pressure with Kane striking twice in
the third period. His second goal, No. 14 on the spring, made it 6-5, but UMass senior Kevin Leveille kept the Crimson at
bay as he connected for a pair of goals less than two minutes apart--his third and fourth tallies of the afternoon--and the
Minutemen never looked back.
Primm's goal with 1:09 to go in the game, his team-leading 17th on the season, accounted for the afternoon's final score.
Harvard outshot UMass, 38-30, for the game and controlled 28 ground balls, compared to UMass' 17. Bill Schell made 12
saves for the winners, while Jake McKenna (Darien, CT) was credited with seven stops.
Four games remain on Harvard's 2003 schedule, and Saturday's visit by Yale (7 p.m.) marks the season's final home contest.
The Crimson is at Notre Dame on April 26, goes to Colgate on April 29, and plays at Dartmouth on Friday, May 2. |
