game-winning goal at 3:03 of overtime to give the Harvard men's
lacrosse team a 7-6 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon on
Jordan Field. Primm's goal, his second of the afternoon and 18th of
the season, beat Notre Dame goalie Nick Antol (Baldwin, MD) to his
left to propel the Crimson to the win. Harvard improves to 6-7 on
the season, while the Fighting Irish fall to 4-8 with the loss.
Goals were at a premium in the first half, as the teams
entered the intermission with a 2-2 deadlock. A goal by longpole
Eric Simon (Flemington, NJ) gave Notre Dame a 1-0 lead after the
first quarter, and the team took a 2-0 lead with a John Flandina
(West Islip, NY) tally just over four minutes into the second. The
Crimson rallied to get a pair of goals - from Jeff Gottschall
(Swampscott, MA) and Primm - to enter halftime tied at two.
The teams traded goals in the third. Senior co-captain Jim
Christian (Chester, NJ) gave Harvard its first lead of the day with a
goal at 12:12, but the Irish knotted the score at three with just
seconds remaining in the quarter, as Devin Ryan (Kensington, MD) took
a feed from Matt Malakoff (Bay Shore, NY) and beat goalie Jake
McKenna (Darien, CT) to send the teams into the final frame tied at
three.
Scoring came fast and furious early inthe final frame, as
there were three-goals scored in a one-minute span early in the
quarter. The Irish took a 4-3 lead with a Brian Giordano (Princeton,
NJ) goal at 13:57 before goals by freshman Mike McBride (Ridgewood,
NJ) and Derek Nowak (New Haven, CT) just ten seconds apart gave the
home team a slim 5-4 advantage. The Irish again evened things up
with another Ryan goal with just over six minutes remaining, and that
5-5 score would hold up until an action-packed last minute of
regulation. Giordano would find the back of the net to give the
Irish a lead with :44 on the clock after hitting the pipe just thirty
seconds before. As the seconds ticked away, the ball found its way
to Gottschall onthe far side, who ripped a shot over the left
shoulder of Antol for the game-tying goal.
McKenna finished with 12 saves, while his Notre Dame
counterpart Antol made 18.
Harvard will be in action again on Tuesday evening, hosting
the Raiders of Colgate University at 7 p.m.
