The game saw five ties and four lead changes before Kane's goal gave Harvard the lead for good. Crimson goalie Evan O'Donnell (Guilderland, N.Y.) nailed down the win when he stopped Penn's David Andrzejewski with seven seconds left.
The win snapped a four-game series losing streak to Penn, while it was the 10th straight game between the schools that was decided by three goals or less.
The teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 6-6 after Carle Stenmark's (Denver, Colo.) scored an extra-man goal from Kane's feed with 16 seconds left in the third period. Harvard gained a 7-6 lead on Brian Mahler's (Birmingham, Mich.) fifth goal of the season as he beat Penn goalie Dennis Cole with 11:27 left in the fourth quarter.
Penn answered on its next possession, however, as James Riordan fed David Andrzejewski in a crowd, and Andrzejewski spun a quick shot past O'Donnell with 10:07 left, making it 7-7.
Harvard had possession with two minutes left, but a crease violation gave the ball back to the Quakers, who quickly worked downfield. Zandy Reich's shot with 1:06 left was blocked by the Harvard defense, and the Crimson was awarded possession on a closely contested chase that ended near the Harvard bench.
The game-winner came when sophomore midfielder Adam Mahfouda (Hewlett Harbor, N.Y.) fed Kane at the top left of the zone, and Kane whistled a high shot past Cole.
Harvard had threatened to run away with the game early as the Crimson gained a 3-1 lead after a first quarter in which it outshot the Quakers by a 15-3 margin. But Penn owned the second period, scoring all three goals of the period and outshooting Harvard, 11-1 to take a 4-3 lead into the break.
Mahler and freshman attackman Brooks Scholl (New Canaan, Conn.) scored two goals each for Harvard, which saw six different players score goals. O'Donnell finished with 13 saves as the Crimson improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play.
Penn was paced by Andrzejewski and Garrett Blomquist, who had two goals each. Cole made 12 stops for the Quakers, who fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the Ivies. |
