The Game Story:
GENEVA, N.Y.—Seniors Mike Conklin (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.) and Patrick Meade (Schenectady/Schenectady, N.Y.) recorded three goals apiece to lead the 19th-ranked Hobart College lacrosse team to a 14-8 victory over the University of Hartford at McCooey Field this afternoon. The Statesmen improved to 3-0 with a balanced scoring effort that saw nine different players score goals.

Hobart first-year Jeff Ryan (West Genesee/Syracuse, N.Y.) posted a game-high four points on two goals and two assists, while classmate Jeff Colburn (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) handed out three assists. The Statesmen outshot the Hawks by a 2-to-1 ratio (42-21).

Senior Josh Wasson-McQuigge (Adam Scott/Peterborough, Ontario) paced Hartford (2-3) with a hat trick of his own, while classmate Matt Holman (Malvern C.I./Toronto, Ontario) chipped in two goals and an assist.

Hobart got off to a fast start, scoring the first three goals of the game and taking a 4-1 advantage into the second quarter. Junior Chris David (Georgetown Prep/Silver Springs, Md.), first-year Brandon Buchmayr (Darien/Darien, Conn.), and Conklin staked the home to the early lead with consecutive scores.

Hartford finally broke through 13 minutes into the contest, netting an extra-man goal, but the Statesmen responded with another three-goal outburst. This time Meade, sophomore Sean Murphy (Bishop Timon-St. Jude/Buffalo, N.Y.), and first-year Matt Smalley (Avon Old Farms/Cumberland, R.I.) did the honors to lift Hobart to a 6-1 advantage.

The Hawks sandwiched a pair of goals around a Statesmen tally to head into halftime with Hobart enjoying a 7-3 lead. Of Hartford’s three first half goals, only one came at even strength.

After the break, Meade and Ryan scored in succession to raise the score to 9-3 in favor of the home team.

Holman netted back-to-back scores late in the frame to get the Hawks within four, but the Statesmen responded with another three-goal run (Meade-Conklin-Ryan), spanning the third and fourth quarters to essentially put the game out of reach.

Sophomore Dan Spinella (New Hartford/New Hartford, N.Y.) helped Hobart to a 14-11 advantage at the faceoff X, winning eight of his 12 restarts. Senior defenseman Matt Murphy (Haverford/Havertown, Pa.) collected a game-high six ground balls for the Statesmen.

Senior goalie Mike DeSantis (Mountain Lakes/Mountain Lakes, N.J.) picked up the win with five saves, while first-years Garret Allwes (Amherst/Amherst, N.Y.) and Jon McMahon (Sweet Home/Tonawanda, N.Y.) combined for eight stops for Hartford.

Hobart is back in action on March 14, when they begin a five-game road swing at Binghamton. Faceoff with the Bearcats is scheduled for 6 p.m.
