sophomore Mike Morrison posted career-highs of three goals and four points to lead the 18th-ranked Pride of
Hofstra (2-1) to a 13-5 victory over the 14th-ranked Big Red of Cornell (1-2) at James M. Shuart Stadium
Saturday.
Senior attack Joe Kostolansky also posted a goal and three assists as the Pride recorded their second straight victory
of the week. Red-shirt freshman goalie Matthew Southard recorded nine saves in 58 minutes of action to notch his
second win of the season. Joe Boulukos scored twice for Cornell while Andrew Collins added a goal and an assist for
the Big Red.
The Pride jumped on Cornell early scoring twice in the first 3:04 as Ryan Lucas opened the scoring at the 1:06 mark off
a pass from Kostolansky. Kostolansky would score his fourth of the season on the man-up 1:58 later off a feed from
Morrison. Femminella would score his fifth of the season with 3:49 to play in the period to give the Pride a 3-0 lead
after one quarter.
Morrison would score his first of the season 4:06 into the second quarter on the man-up off a pass from freshman
Tim Treubig, and Femminella scored his second of the game and sixth of the year from freshman Ryan Miller two
minutes later to make it 5-0. Freshman John Keysor scored his first of the year with 7:47 to play in the half and
Femminella completed his "hat-trick" six seconds later as Keysor fed Kostolansky, who fed Femminella for the goal and
a 7-0 lead. Andrew Collins ended Hofstra's run with a man-up goal from Sean Greenhalgh for Cornell with 6:18 to
play in the second. But Ryan Miller scored on a behind the back shot off a pass from Mike Allain to close out the first
half scoring and give the Pride an 8-1 lead at the intermission.
The Big Red scored three of the first four goals in the third quarter as Boulukos scored twice and J.P. Schalk
sandwiched a Morrison goal to closed the deficit to 9-4. But Keith Mekeel scored twice and Femminella scored his
fourth 4:18 into the fourth quarter to give the Pride a 12-4 cushion.
Cornell picked up 41 ground balls to Hofstra's 37 but the Pride outshot the Big Red 37-32 and won 12 of 22
face-offs. Hofstra will host the Princeton Tigers on Saturday, March 15th at 1:30 p.m. at Shuart Stadium. |
