recorded four goals and two assists as 14th-ranked Hofstra won its Colonial
Athletic Association opener with a 14-8 victory over Drexel at Shuart Stadium
Saturday afternoon. The Pride, who won for the second straight time and third
time in the last four contests, improved to 5-3, 1-0 in the CAA. Drexel, which
dropped its fifth straight game, fell to 1-6, 0-2.
Freshman middie John Keysor posted a career-high four points on a goal and
three assists, and sophomore Ryan Vilar added two goals and an assist for
Hofstra. Patrick Friel tallied three goals and Brendan Morgan added two goals
and two assists for the Dragons of Drexel.
Hofstra, which never trailed in the contest, scored the first four goals in
the contest as Vilar, Ryan Miller, Ryan Lucas and Kostolansky scored first
quarter goals. But Drexel got on the board with just 54 seconds remaining in
the quarter as Friel tallied his sixth goal of the year to close the gap to
4-1 after the first period.
After Feminella scored his 18th of the season for Hofstra just 51 seconds into
the second quarter to boost the lead to 5-1, Drexel got unanswered goals from
Friel twice in the second and Sean Moloney 5:59 into the third to close to
5-4. But Hofstra would score the next six goals as freshman Brian Crichlow
scored his first college goal, followed by Kostolansky, two from Femminella
(his 19th and 20th of the season) and then two more from Kostolansky (his 14th
and 15th) to take an 11-4 lead with 12:29 to play in the contest as Hofstra
cruised to victory.
The Pride outshot Drexel 53-28 and picked up 42 ground balls to the Dragons
32. Hofstra goalie Matt Southard recorded 9 saves and alloed six goals in
53:32 of work while Drexel goalie Will Melton posted 15 saves and allowed 12
goals in 52:16. Hofstra posted its 20th consecutive victory over an unranked
opponent dating back to an 8-7 overtime loss to Delaware on April 14, 2000.
Hofstra will travel to Towson University next Friday night for a regular
season match-up between the preseason top two teams in the CAA. Drexel will
travel to Wagner on Wednesday.
