The Dragons scored five straight goals in the fourth quarter, including two by Andrew Chapman, as #17 Drexel posted an 8-7 win over #20 Hofstra Saturday afternoon at Shuart Stadium. Freshman midfielder Tom Interlicchio led the Pride with three goals. The Dragons improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the CAA while the Pride fell to 6-7 on the year and 3-3 in conference play.
Despite the loss, Hofstra claimed the fourth and final spot in the CAA Championship Tournament due to Sacred Heart's 15-14 win over Villanova. Hofstra will play at top-seeded Towson on Wednesday night while second-seeded Drexel will host Delaware in the CAA Semifinals.
For the seventh time this season, the Pride found themselves on the short side of a one-goal decision even though it looked as if Hofstra would come away with a win over Drexel-a team they had never lost to in 18 previous meetings- take the number two seed and host a semifinal game on Wednesday. The Pride, who never trailed in the contest through three quarters, led 2-1 after one quarter, 4-3 at halftime and opened up a 6-3 lead after three quarters on goals by freshman Tom Interlicchio, his second of three on the day, and senior Ryan Miller, who notched his 12th goals of the year.
But the Dragons still had some fire left and Ron Garling started Drexel's five straight goals run just 1:34 into the fourth, scoring in front off a pass from Joe Variano. Just 45 seconds later Variano scored the first of his two goals in the period off a pass from behind the cage from Jon Van Houten. The Dragons tied the game with 9:30 to play as Chapman tallied his 40th goal of the season from around the crease. Chapman got the hat-trick 53 seconds later on a twisting shot from six yards out to take their first lead of the contest at 7-6. Variano and Van Houten hooked up again on a goal 1:09 later with another pass out front and a goal from inside 8 yards.
Despite eight Drexel turnovers in the fourth quarter, the Pride could only muster four shots in the final stanza. One of those Hofstra shots, by Interlicchio after a Drexel turnover near midfield, resulted in a Pride goal from 12 yards outs for the freshman to close the gap to 8-7 with 24 seconds remaining.
Hofstra senior Ryan Miller finished with a goal and an assist while freshman goalie Danny Orlando posted 12 saves in the Pride cage. In addition to Chapman's three goals and one assist, Drexel received two goals and one assist from Variano, two goals from Mike Fillipone, and two assists from Van Houten. Dragon goalie Bruce Bickford stopped 10 shots in the Drexel cage. |
